A Russian Imperial Stout full of roasted malts, rye, oats, honey malt, brown sugar and Magnum and Fuggle hops. Straight out of hibernation, we recommend not feeding the Sleepy Bear.

For all I know, the beer named Sleepy Bear 2019 is simply Sleepy Bear 2016 in a new year. I have no idea if there was a 2017 or 2018, but I figure they have to do this beer every year. It would be nice if they said what bourbon barrels this was aged in. So maybe this isn’t even a new beer and setting it up as such is pointless.

But this beer sure isn’t.

Pours dark, tannish edges, minimal lacing that lasts well. Smell is sweet and boozy, with plenty of notes of chocolate, vanilla, dark roasty malt, honey, brown sugar, wooden barrel, and boozy bourbon. Taste is all of the above, and everything just melds together exceptionally well. Feel may even be better than the taste, as hard as it is to believe. It’s thick and sticky and syrupy and bold and mouth watering and just absolutely amazing. I recommend cooling it for 12 hours, than taking about two hours to drink it, as it warms up and rounds out extremely well.

I first tried Sleepy Bear as the vanilla/coconut version and rated that as a 4.69. I have to say the base is slightly better. I got two cans of it. Glad I have one to age (going to shove it into the back of my bar for hopefully a year or so), but I’m going to see if I can find more, because it’s stellar and I want to drink a lot of it.

Two last notes, more related to this review:
1) I hope this review doesn’t get pulled because it’s not a new beer
2) trying to post a photo on the beer page while following the parameters of the site apparently takes a computer science degree
