unique brew, unexpected in here too, really solid, not as sour as anticipated, and definitely without all the vinegar harshness and pucker the style usually boasts, more subtle, more drinkable, and its neat that its barrel rested, i think the light oak brings a lot to this, a richness, a wintery maturity even if it was only in their quick, these guys are doing quite a few clever beers at the moment, and it was cool to get to check the place out and drink through much of the lineup. light to mid amber in color with some obvious cloudiness. the nose and taste give off heavy red berry, raspberry, dried cherry, and currant to me, with a light medicinal tang but less acidity than expected, instead its got some malty sweetness through most of it, a hint of toffee and brown sugar, light vanilla from the oak, soft earthen spiciness, and a wet mineral profile that lengthens this. a warmth to the grain, baked and bready and kilned, toasted notes, light fig or raisin, tannic red wine later, and some light funk too as it warms, but not as evolved on the fermentation side as the best of these, and i actually wish for a little more pep from the sourness to balance it at the end. it feels a little amateurish to me, but its also distinct enough to be memorable and cool with the layer of newish tasting wood on it, maybe needs a little more time, but this is fun and different. we had a blast here!
