2016 notes
Clear, pale amber coloring, with active carbonation, and a slim white, soon gone, head.

In the nose: lightly spicy, fruity.

In the mouth: more fruit (stone & citrus), even more spice, and that little extra kick from rye malt. Light bodied, easy drinking, refreshing, and ever so tasty. The rye malt really grows on me, in this one. Spicy, smooth, delicious. A nice and tasty saison.

Not entirely sure why they felt like naming it after a Ween song, but I should know better than to question the absurdity that Oliphant bandies about. After all, their motto, Let Unreason Reign, comes from The Brotherhood of Dada from the 90's Grant Morrison-penned Doom Patrol comic book.

But, I can't help but think of these lyrics whenever I see the tap handle and pull a pint:
Don't get 2 close to my fantasy
Don't be afraid to clutch the hand of your creator
Stare into the lion's eyes
And if u taste the candy
You'll get 2 the surprise.

Had on tap. Golden orange body with a thin cap of white foam. Rye, lemon, hay, earthy pepper and french yeast. Taste is a watered down version of the smell, rye and lemon star. Feel has appropriate yeast complexion and bite on finish, just want more flavor to go with.

16oz can. Poured out a cloudy, golden orange color with a small, tan head of foam. It smelled of rye, lemon and wheat. Sweet wheat, spicy rye and a tart lemon bite.

my can has way cooler art than the one pictured here, and the abv is marked at 6% on the can, but its the same beer more or less, same name anyways, might have evolved some over time. its a decent saison, but having been on a run of high quality belgian saison lately, this one seems to be lacking some depth and refinement. its hazy and opaque opaque dull yellow colored but with a very active white head. brewed with rye it says, and i get a little of that. my critique here is not with the grain base. i think the wheat and rye together are nice, a pils malt element is here too, and its got a lot of body and sort of rawness that i like. the yeast is where im less excited. it tastes to me like a classic 3711 french saison pitch, nothing else going on, and fermented real warm. that belgian fruitiness comes out, white wine esters, and a slight twang of harshness that doesnt belong, its one dimensional and samey in the area i most want a saison to be different, but it still tastes good, and is rounded out in the end by an above average bitter hopping. the best feature by miles is the mouthfeel, which is effervescent, creamy, and dry, really excellent feel for the style and it actually improves the beer overall for me, if this was flatter, i really wouldnt much care for it, so smart to make it so lively. this could be really improved with a brett pitch or even a mix of yeast strains, but its an easy drinker and a cool beer from these guys on the whole.

Pours a hazy cloudy orangish yellow color with fizzy white head. Spice, saison yeast, wheat, cloves, light fruits, and some bread on the nose; follows onto the palate. Medium bodied. Finishes with spice and wheat, very well done.

S: smells like light grains, fruit, over ripe fruit, spice and hops. Belgian yeast aromas are medium to medium high, malt aromas are medium to medium low and hop aromas are low.

L: brilliant gold permeated with streams of rapidly rising bubbles under a 2.5" off white to cream colored foam cap with moderate retention and a very fine bead.

T: Belgian yeast dominates the flavors with fruit, over ripe fruit, a light sweetness and an assertive bitter finish. The fruits are a blend of berry and stone fruit with traces of tropical. The hop bitterness and the yeast flavors achieve a nice balance ending in a lingering berry bitter finish. The yeast flavors are medium high, hop bitterness is medium to medium high, hop flavors are low, and malt flavors medium to medium low.

F: The carbonation is above average and the body is medium to medium light.

O: This is a very well made Saison and is very easy to drink.
