A modern take on a world classic, Ansbacher Lager is a Premium Lager Beer, brewed in London. Drawing on the family heritage of our brewery, Ansbacher Lager is London’s nod to one of Bavaria’s greatest brewing traditions: Helles Lager.
The beer is a bright, brilliant gold in colour, and is clean, crisp and refreshing. A delicate aroma of traditional and contemporary hops is paired with a subtly sweet malt base, leading to a snappy, bitter finish.

440ml can.
L: Clear, golden colour with a few streams of micro bubbles rising to one finger of persistent head that leaves spotty lacing.
S: Very hoppy. Green and spicy.
T: Grassy, peppery hops with moderate bitterness that builds.
F: Medium body, low carbonation and an extra dry finish.
O: Read the review from Beginner2 below and I agree this lager is more hoppy than expected. Also agree it has more Pilsner-like than Helles-like character. That said, A&H describe this beer as a London Lager with just a nod to the Helles style and the label just states “Lager Beer”, so I’m not particularly bothered. Maybe a tad more bitter and less sweet than my personal preference but enjoyable nonetheless.

While adding to BA, I must explain my styling. The brewer asked for a Helles styling and UnTappd followed; but this has too many hops to be a Helles. IMHO, German Pils would be more accurate... maybe even Czech Pils.
Not Lively, Ansbacher Lager Looks average. Smells are mostly malt with more hops in my nose than I was expecting. Tastes have way more hops than I expected and they take over mid-palate and push out the possibility of the soft, gentle finish that Helles is known for. Bubbly and happy, whatever softness the Helles is known for is hard for me to find.
Having panned this Lager, how do I explain the good Overall Hugs I give A&H? Because they are quite good at the British tradition... and my advice would be to continue focussing on that. Let lagers be silent until well into A&H's second decade is established. Make the hometown happy. London is a big market.
