Framzwart is a spontaneously fermented beer adhering to the Méthode Tradionnelle standard. It was aged for 18-24 months in used French oak barrels and then re-fermented with two pounds per gallon of black raspberries for three months.

2018 vintage drank in 2024. Looks like cab on the pour with 1 mm of lacing. Smell is dark fruits and red wine vinegar - probably due to the age. Tart and sour with lots of funk, like your mom.

L: A dark violet red beer.
S: A strong sass of raspberries.
T: This tastes like a cabernet sauivngon made from black berries. A sharp old flavor that fades off into a smooth oak finish.
F: A wine made form blackberries.
O: Another odd wine beer that combines the usual ingredients for wine except we use blackberries.

A 2018 bottle.

A: Pours a dark purple/garnet red color. The stunning color is more akin to grape juice or a darker red wine and looks like it can stain that color as well. At first a one finger pink head rises, but recedes and fizzles to a small ring. I light filmy lace left behind.
S: Dark berries up front for sure. Almost jam like. Vinous and acidic. Not the most complex nose, but very intense.
T: Dark jammy berry notes. Vinous and really acidic. Not a lot of funk or anything else to take away from the acidity. Which becomes puckering and one noted after a while.
M/O: A medium to full body. Good crisp carbonation, and very tannin like, without having a lot of oak/wood characteristics to back that up. Interesting to drink once, and enjoyable for what it is. Though the acidity makes this a little harder to drink than I would like.

This was the only year or vintage available on the shelves, and I was interested to try a fully spontaneously fermented American Lambic. Especially since it was not something I had to wait in line for. It is also expensive (just over $30), I try not to let that influence my score but it is something to note. Overall, it is interesting and glad I got to try it. Though the one noted acidity is the overall downfall for me here. As the fruits struggle to help, and there is not a lot of funky yeast or wood either. I would very much want to try a fresher bottle to see how that differs, as is this will have to stand for my review and opinion.

Drank on January 1st, 2019. Deep, rich, tart, tons of fruit. Beautiful pour - looks like mildly carbonated grape juice. Terrific nose - the blackberries are incredible.

Funk Factory has done good to use traditional methods with some new world flair, but it was always restrained and artful. Here they throw it out the window and go wild with it all, and frankly the risk was worth the reward! Midnight purple body with a magenta foam ring that slowly fades. Blackberry, raspberry, wine poached cherry, oak, flowers with a slightly acidic finish with some light funk. Taste follows the nose, but the oak is even more expressive, and the blackberry/raspberry combo is set ablaze in intensity by the finish with the light funk, acidity, and supporting fruits. Get some hay and leather in the base with the oak too. Feel is tart, juicy in the fruitiness before quickly drying toward the finish, somewhat acidic and funky. This one stands out in a crowd

2018 vintage; drank 4/26/19 @ Elastic Arts.

At an impromptu bottle share, this was the clear winner for me; fruit forward but complex. A real treat; worth tracking down if you have access!!
