3.59/5  rDev -7.7%
look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

Appearance: Pours a mostly clear, deeply bright amber/orange color with a heavy white head. SRM of 11. (4.00)

Aroma: Dense and sweet aromas of mango and more wet mango juice. Some orange cream too. (3.75)

Flavor: Flavor follows with more dense wet mango and more mango juice. It has a large amount of sweetness, but also surprisingly has a respectable amount of orange citrus bitterness present that comes through the middle/end. (3.50)

Feel: Heavier-bodied. Low carbonation. Drinks along the consistency of whiskey. (3.50)

Compared to Claw King 7/4/20: Pours a much darker amber color. Strong flavors/aromas of mango, juice, alcohol, and sweetness. Less crisp grapefruit and citrus. Overall, much heavier and thicker.

Overall: A very heavy and wet mango-drinking triple IPA. Heavy, juicy mango, and alcoholic. A surprising bitterness is present however. Ultimately, it's too heavy and sweet for my liking right now. (Final Rating: 3.59)

16oz can. Poured out a clear, golden orange color with a small, white head of foam. It smelled of orange, pine and toasted caramel. Sweet citrus notes up front with a piney bitterness and toffee finish.

Tasted in a Spiegelau IPA glass from a one pint can on November 11, 2018. Citrus and mango aromas finishing with a ton of grapefruit and tropical fruit in the flavor. With a light and balanced malt body, the hops shine through creating a bold, hoppy brew.

Pours a clear amber with a thin white head. Strong pine and floral hops on the nose. The taste follows, with a bit of pineapple sweetness to temper the bitterness. Not a lot of malt backbone--it's extremely hop forward without being too abrasive. Not a lot of alcohol flavor, which is nice. Medium bodied and medium carbonation. Overall a solid, no-frills DIPA.

S: resiny hop aromas featuring citrus and tropical fruit and traces of fresh mowed grass and a hint of biscuit. The hop aromas are medium high and the malt aromas are medium low.

L: bright copper liquid topped with a 2" off-white blanket of foam that has good retention and provides good lace. Phantom

T: Taxi starts big and herbal with a citrus rind and tannin bitterness supported by light malt and an initial trace of sweetness. Hop flavors feature citrus and tropical fruit with a faint berry presence. Phantom Taxi dries out by the finish with a light touch of hop astringency and leads to a long lingering bitterness.

F: Medium body and carbonation.

O: excellent, hoppy beer.

16 oz. can that I’m told arrived at the end of February. Lack of a canning date guarantees this is one-and-done. Date your cans, people!

The pour is clear & gold, no hint of the Northeast here in the Midwest. Nose is citrus with an overwhelming blast of marshmallows. Either I’m having flashbacks to August 2016 or my mouth is broked.

Phantom Taxi - Cuba taxi or Manhattan, because the difference is about 60 years. The citrus is strong, but so is the dankness that mixes in about 50/50. Orange peel bitterness mixed with orange sugared sweetness. Bitterness builds to a pleasant crescendo: too many brewers have forgotten this aspect of the IPA, or turned it into a Bayer commerical. Easy to swig.

Insight for me has been sporadic - good here, great there, OK there, lousy here. This rotates along the axis of its bitterness, but I like it. They should have packaged this as their West Coast IPA. Good, solid IIPA.

Phantom Taxi pours a copper color with a small lacing head. Mellow crisp aroma, with hints of hop. Flavor is very floral, lots of hops and finishes bitter and dry. Good dry feel. Overall, a very good clean crisp bitter and dry IPA.

Amazeballs! The hops are on point and the overall taste with such a high ABV is an amazing achievement. The aroma is not overbearing. This is one of my new favorite IPAs!

Nice but oddly subtle aroma of mango, grapefruit and hop oil spiciness. Taste is similar, a little stronger than the aroma, but still a little light for a DIPA. Smooth and creamy but finish isn't as clean as desired. Not very bitter, which I think is a change from previous incarnations. Very nice to drink but not as flavorful as Troll Way or Dankbot.

Insight Phantom Taxi pours a slightly hazy light bronze color. The head is an inch in height, and recedes into moderate lacing. The aroma is of dank citrus, and grapefruit. The taste is really light for a DIPA. Hell, it would be light for an IPA. It is pleasant enough, but not as strong as is generally acceptable for the style. The mouthfeel is medium-full bodied with a mildly chewy texture, and appropriate carbonation. Overall, this beer is by no means bad. It is just not what I am looking for in a double IPA.

Cheers to Goblinmunkey7 for this beer

Consumed 6/9/16

A: Medium orange with some burnt orange at the core and honey gold around the edges - some chill haze - pours with a small, white head, fades to a few wisps, retains a small collar, leaves some specs and streaks of lacing

S: Citrus with some caramel, basically - juicy hops, with some orange, tangerine, and grapefruit - floral citrus and some oily, pithy citrus - herbal, leafy, and resinous hops - some sticky pine - earthy - sweetness and some moderately burly malts (aiming for some level of balance is such a Midwest thing...) - bread, biscuits, caramel, and caramelized grains - some booze aroma

T: Orange and grapefruit juice, oil, and pith - lingering pith, with a potent level of bitterness - lemon rind - leafy, grassy, herbal hops - resin - lots of sticky pine, somewhat woodsy - earthy - more bitterness - malt base is less interesting than the aroma suggests - mostly bread, bread crust, grains, and caramelized grains - some sweetness and some sticky booze

M: Medium body, smooth, low carbonation, earthy and boozy finish - works as a sipper

O: But who was taxi?

Phantom Taxi would probably be better if the bitterness and the booze were dialed back a bit. It's not bad, but it's very middle of the road in a very mercilessly competitive beer style. I should also note that either my palate is broken or this tastes oddly similar to Sebago's Whistle Punk, which I reviewed last night.

for 9%, the booze is sneaky on this one. totally overshadowed by bitter.

looks nice. fluffy, white head that disappears quickly. otherwise mostly clear.

nose is lots of pine with some citrus. mouth doesn't keep the pace - just bitter up front with a lingering bitterness afterward. did i mention it's bitter?

i've bought this one three times now. i'm not a fan, but i keep coming back to it. i don't think it warrants the 1's and 2's below, especially considering how high people tend to rate things, but this is pretty unbalanced at best.

Poured from a 16 oz. can into an IPA glass.

Appearance: Pours a bright golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid finger of white head which settles into a thin patchy layer.

Smell: A juicy and piney hop driven aroma with a scent of citrus fruit and pine. Citrus hop scent of grapefruit, mango, orange peel, lemon, and pineapple. Piney hop hints along with some grass. Light malt hints of caramel, grains, and cracker along with some yeast. A solid aroma.

Taste: Like the nose hints at, a juicy, piney, and bitter hop driven taste with notes of citrus fruit and pine. Upfront citrus hop notes of grapefruit, orange peel, lemon zest, and pineapple. Earthy hop notes of pine and grass. Light background malt notes of caramel, cracker, and grains along with yeast. A solid taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Ripe and juicy with a bitter drying finish.

Overall: A solid Double IPA. Ripe and bitter with some nice juicy tropical flavor.

Most bitter DIPA I've ever had. Aroma is money. There's good flavors in this beer, on the front and middle. On the back is where the bitterness jumps up off the charts. Worth trying, but too bitter for a DIPA, IMO. Decent beer, love the brewery. Cheers.

From a 16oz can:

Appearance: Clear gold, good head.

Smell: Citrus, sweet grapefruit.

Taste: Sweet, bright citrus flavor throughout. Moderate bitterness that ends very dry.

Overall: Found a 4 pack this weekend, packaged on 4/20, so almost a month old. I thought this was a pretty standard, older style double IPA in that it really went for a dry, lasting finish instead of the fruity or danky flavors more prevalent today. I thought it was a pretty good blend of sweet and bitter.

Clear golden color with a small head that quickly disappeared. Just a few specks of lacing is left down the glass during consumption. The aroma is the best part of this beer. Nice citrus and pine notes with a faint grainy malt note. But the flavor is harsh and astringent with little subtlety. Just overwhelms the palate with bitterness. Highlights is that you cannot taste the alcohol. Hints of pine and an even fainter hint of citrus. Double IPA body and decently carbonated.

This was recommended to me by a store beer guy who said he liked it more than Double Crossing. This is not in the same league as Double Crossing, Hop Forest, or many other MN double IPAs.

Poured from can into shaker.

Look: Nice, amber.

Smell: A little fruitiness. Nothing bursting but tempting for sure.

Taste: Holy hell this is bitter, too much so. It overwhelms anything else that might have been good about it. As someone who enjoys a really bitter beer, this was unenjoyable even for me.

Feel: Relatively thin. Couldn't necessarily tell, though as my tongue was melting from the bitterness.

Overall: I had high hopes and they were dashed seconds after my first sip. I wonder if they tasted this before it went out the door because it's just too much bitterness.

Poured from the tap at the Insight Tap room.

Look: A very nice looking IIPA. Cloudy amber

Smell: The nose was quite nice where I got some of the initial fruitiness from the hops.

Taste: This is where everything went awry. The first sip initially has nice fruit flavor, then careens into medicinally bitter and almost undrinkable.

Feel: Crisp and thin mouthfeel.

Overall: I felt like there was something wrong with this beer and would potentially give it another go, but I think their current run is far too astringent for me. I think they potentially need to back off their boil to remove these off flavors
