The head is very dark and creamy, leaving a dense coating of lace on a Nedloh snifter. That head lasts several minutes before resting in a thick layer over a velvety dark brown, almost black, beer.
Figs and spiced rum provide a strong opening before the rum overtakes the fig late in each sip. It is sweet with somewhat balancing bitterness; both are well controlled. Warmth exposes chocolate, berries and some molasses. An odd perfumy aroma resides in the background.
The flavors closely follow the nose, in particular the way the rum overtakes the figs. Anniversary One lacks the complexity anticipated from the style and smokiness noted on the label. A light, sweet finish brings out chocolate and lingers.
The texture is hard and smooth, while the body is full. Interestingly, a feathery light carbonation lifts the body. Alcohol is less than expected, but builds with warmth.
This makes for a nice treat to be enjoyed while reading. It stands up to warmth, and while short of the Belgian Dark Ale guidelines, it does approximate the style. Rum barrel aging made for a welcoming touch.

Had on tap at Anniversary event at the brewery. Its brew with figs and cacao and Cardamom (which comes through the strongest) then aged in rum barrels from Peru for 9 months. Mouthfeel was good and not viscous. Bought some bottles(25oz) and will sit on to see if mellows out. Worth a try.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
