The Gardener’s Tale is a tart saison, partially soured with our house lactobacillus culture, the first batch of which was infused with locally-grown chocolate mint and orange mint for subtle cooling herbal complexity. The second batch featured spearmint and pineapple mint from another local farm.

This one reminded me of working in a garden center, constantly smelling all the unique herbs that were being experimented with at the time. It was tart, quite herbal, minty, and almost dessert-like, but not quite. I want more--particularly to be able to describe it better, but also to be able to enjoy a full pour.

On tap. Knowing its a Saison with lactobacillus, it is great! If you didn't expect it the tartness would be a bit of a surprise. Straw yellow with a thin white head. Smell is citrus lemony, fruity and grainy and yeasty. Taste is similar, lots of fruit and citrus juice, tart and sour but not overpowering. I don't recall any mint flavors, and don't get the typical earthy farmhouse must flavors. Very bright and crisp tart feel, not cloying. Nice beer!

A: Pours a straw yellow with lots of visible carbonation, white head of tiny bubbles forming around the edges of the glass.
S: Aromas of lemon peel, lemon grass, refreshing citrus and a nice non musty saison ale.
T: Flavors of bursting sweet citrus but not overpowering, just overly fresh really. Light mint and yeast flavors really take over but also very faint, really making this a highly carbonated very drinkable farmhouse ale. Dry and slightly stinging from the high carb levels.
M: Highly carbonated, very light body. If this were available in 6 packs, I would be a regular customer easily.
O: Overall this is a not overly complex farmhouse ale, however the lack of any mustiness or off flavors really stick out to me with this. I have had some great saisons, and this one while not seeming to be the 'best' saison I have had seems to not be overdoing it. That seems to be the best way I can describe this. I make more complex flavored saisons myself and would be happy to be able to make one along these lines as it is very enjoyable while not overly complex.

Batch #1 tasted and smelled like baby diapers.
Batch #2 was an improvement and more drinkable, but I think I'm done with trying more batches of this one.

Drinking this one as a guest tap at the Stony Creek Brewery into a snifter glass. Pours an almost clear golden color with a small head that fades fast to a ring, minimal lacing. Smell is sweet, herbal, yeasty, nice saison. Taste is varied, starts sweet with hints of lemon, middle is touch saison yeast. Finishes with some light citrus and herbs, very garden-like with a bit of mint and fresh grass, and just a bit of tartness. Not really a dry finish, quite clingy, but with a light body. Overall a nice saison that didn't try to push any crazy envelopes, was a bit too sweet and herbal, could have used more yeast and needed to be drier.

A: The beer is hazy light golden yellow in color and has a moderate amount of large bubbles rising to the surface. It poured with a quarter finger high bright white head that quickly died down, leaving specks of bubbles on the surface and a thin collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of herbs are present in the nose—mint and thyme seem to stand out in particular.
T: The taste follows the smell, but the flavors of mint and thyme are a bit stronger. No yeast flavors are perceptible.
M: It feels light-bodied (but not watery) on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. There are faint hints of creaminess in the mouthfeel.
O: This beer is a lot lighter in body compared to other saisons and doesn't really have anything in the way of spicy yeast flavors or dryness in the mouthfeel. However, the smell and taste are both interesting. This would make for a good selection during the summer months.
