The jet black pour with the tan head works exceptionally well, as does the heavy rye and coconut notes on the nose.
The taste has the rye and coconut flavors, but it’s the slightest bit watery, and the mouthfeel is a bit watery as well. If this was a bit fuller, I’d shove my Mom out of the way to secure this.

Thanks to Derek for one more shot at this Costa Mesa classic!
After a vigorous pour, a solid mass of deepest brown bordering black, forms. There's even deeper shades of red that highlight the sides of the glass when held to light. When the magic finally settled, that classic smooth memory foam mattress of tanned head forms. It descends slowly and leaves minimal lacing.
Toasted coconut clearly dominates right off the bat. Not quite your Hawaiian Tropic lotion levels, but lots of it. Almond and chocolate lay below. Ultimately, this smells like an Almond Joy bar.
Tastes like one too. Coconut over chocolate over lightly toasted almonds. It has a grainy and slightly herbal finish, but not before a mineral water/ metallic flavor gets its say.
With one sip, I can tell this will benefit with some warmth. It's smooth, mildly creamy, and light to medium bodied. Despite all those sweet sounding flavor contributions, this is surprisingly balanced, perhaps even leaning on the bitter side of the fence, especially considering that toastiness.
I don't know if I like this better than the original or not, and perhaps I never will. Right off the bat, this reminded me of Modern Times Nitro Black House, which is saying something cuz I friggin loved that beer. A little fuller feel and this is world class.

Black in color, thick tan head with good retention.
Toasted coconut and roasted malt aroma.
Coconut and chocolate taste. Not as prominent as the aroma suggested.
Smooth, easy-drinking.

A pleasat surprise find pub in Orange Co...this was recommended as their best and enjoyed it very much after a long day of airport lagers and IPAs, although a little bit on the sweet side for me....great pub and food and people.

If this had a fuller body it would be world class - but it's still absolutely worth having. Outstanding coconut chocolate nose and flavor profile.

On tap at Pizza Press in Fullerton.
Nearly black in pour with a slight cocoa powder colored head.
Nose is an amazing toasted coconut with some roasted malt following.
Taste is nearly as blissful as the nose, bringing much of the same.
Finish is sweet, roasted malt with liter coconut.
Mouthfeel is creamy and full.
Overall, an awesome coconut stout.
