Pint can - dated 3/23/19 - poured into a tulip pint st 48F.
Consumed 7 days after canning.
Pours a very clear, but unfiltered looking golden straw hue, with three fingers of beautiful ivory white, creamy, dense head, that holds its place for ages.
Nose: Very evocative of the West Coast style. Super crisp, green, floral, pine-like aromas. Cilantro, green grape, lemon blossoms, fresh cut grass, chlorophyll (it reakly does), and some unripe passionfruit, and green melon. Very green. Very Nelson-like, most likely from Ella hops. There's some light toasty caramel malt in the background, tying it all together.
Palate: Quite interesting. So you get this flash of malt sweetness, but then it's gone before it even registers, then it becomes dry, and almost only hops, which bring nothing but a green-ness, and some bitter, until you swallow. Sucking in air to aereate the beer in your mouth brings a whisper of flavor - the ghost of sweetness, and some pine and citrus oil - but with a closed mouth, you taste practically nothing. It's only during the finish that the hops show their flavour and nuance. Mimicking the nose quite well, the finish brings pine, lemon, cilantro, cut grass (chlorophyll), green grape, unripe passionfruit, and unripe melon. A lingering, but soft pine-oil bitterness remains. It's actually quite light in flavor.
Mouthfeel/Body: This one is only 6% ABV, and it's lightweight shows. There's no heft. It isn't big, or bold. It has absolutely no mouth- coating oils. There's hardly any malt. I'd rven go as far to call this one a bit watery and thin. I don't use those words lightly in my reviews. This one just feels weak. Effervescence is on the very low side of medium, and comes across a little flat, which only worsens the watery feeling.
Overall: Well. Where do I begin? It looks pretty. It has an absolutely beautiful nose. It smells classically West Coast in spirit, with some exotic Southern Hemisphere flair. The flavour disappoints a little, in its lack of malt character, and general lack of taste, until the finish, which redeems it a little, with some classic and exotic hoppy notes. The body of the beer then really disappoints, with an absolute thinness, flatness, and watery feel. No beautiful resinous hop oils to make up for it, either. It had the potential, but they just didn't commit. This could be great, with some minor tweaks to some major flaws. It's still good. This will pair delightfully with food (a burrito bowl? Hell yeah!), or just make a killer daytime drinker. It's certainly worth trying, and has some unique characteristics, but ad an overall craft beer experience, it's a bit of a let down. It's a - the good, the bad, and the ugly - type of beer.
