500ml bottle. Poured out an opaque, jet-black color with a small, light brown head of foam. It left sudsy sheets of lace on the glass. It smelled of chocolate, toffee and subtle coffee notes. Sweet chocolate, toffee, caramel, roasted malt and hints of toffee.

Opaque in color with coffee head. Aroma of cocoa, hazelnut, salted caramel, booze burn, and light medicinal. Tastes of cocoa, hazelnut, salted caramel, light booze, and some bitterness. Thick bodied with medium carbonation.

Pint can - dated 11/26/19 - poured into a mini stem at refrigerator temp.
A vigorous pour yields a finger of foamy mocha head atop an absolutely impenetrable jet black body, mirror glossy. A swirl deposits some tenacious lacing along the walls of the glass.
Nose: Typical imperial milk stout aroma, mildly roasty with lots of dark chocolate and vanilla, with a hint of that unmistakable lactose scent. It smells perfectly good, but I fail to pull any notes that hint at its "pastry" nature.
Palate: The beer greets the palate with a big slam of chocolate and vanilla. The chocolate flavour is quite authentic, and is clearly the result of actual chocolate, and not just chocolate malt. There is a clear vanilla bean character that screams real added vanilla (I fails to realise at first that this does in fact contain vanilla beans). The lactose isn't overwhelming, and while it can easily be found, I feel like it actually works with this beer. I couldn't spot any pastry flavours at first, but popping your mouth while letting the beer sit inside definitely brings forth a bit of a pastry note that I could see being glazed donut. The finish presents some firm roast that helps balance out the chocolate sweetness, and adds a fair amount of bitterness and drying qualities. The aftertaste lingers with gentle dry roast and a hint of vanilla. The very tail end of the aftertaste finally brings a pastry/donut/cake note.
Mouthfeel/Body: The beer is quite full-bodied, with a round, malty thickness. The lactose addition definitely adds that characteristic creamy touch. Effervescence is not particularly lively, though on par for the weight and style of the beer.
Overall: I had really high hopes for this one. I've yet to be truly impressed with a pastry stout, and I can't day this is even one of th3 better ones I've had. Now, were this just advertised as an "imperial chocolate milk stout", or something not pushing the idea of donuts, then i think I'd be perfectly content with it. By plain milk stout standards, it's actually quite enjoyable. I just fail to grasp much of the pastry element, which is a common theme for me and pastry stouts. Still glad to try an unusual offering from a fantastic Maine brewery. Not a bad milk stout by any stretch.
