As much as we love brewing, drinking, and evangelizing Lagers; we must concede that not every day is a Lager day in the bay. For days and nights when Karl the Fog blankets our skies with a post-apocalyptic mist we now have Owl Theory, our Czech Dark Lager that brings more color, more alcohol, and more body to provide the ultimate in Lager sustenance. No big roasty nose or astringent flavor that you get in a lot of dark Lagers, Owl Theory is focused more on a complex malt profile with notes of candied almonds, caramel and chocolate stroopwafels, over-priced artisanal toast, and a soft floral bouquet. It's not normal for a beer this dark to be so incredibly crushable, but Owl Theory is yet another Lager in our arsenal that we can't put down.

A: The beer is close to being black in color - only slight traces of dark brown are visible near the edges of the glass when the glass is held up to a bright light. It poured with a short off white head that left a thin collar around the edge and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of dark malts, chocolate and caramel syrup are present in the nose.
T: The taste has lots of flavors of dark malts and notes of syrup that you would drench stroopwafels in.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is packed with lots of malty aromas and flavors - akin to what you would expect from a stout - but isn't that heavy on the palate, making this one very easy to drink.

Pour from the Monterey location. Clear dark cola, light tan head and decent lacing, smell is light coffee and dark malt husks, sweet crusty brown bread, taste is Sourdough brown bread, light dark malts, mild coffee roast hints of chocolate, feel is light and creamy. Light, brown bread, roast.

A stylistic outlier in FW's lineup, this dark lager is a showcase of complex malt flavor. Darker than you'd expect. Aromas of earthy cocoa and dark dried fruit, set off with just a hint of herbal hops. This is a supple malty lager with an unusual depth of flavor, and while the finish might be a little lacking in length, it's a really well done beer in an unusual style for the region.

Pours dark brown. 2 finger tan head. The head retention is very good. There's some good lacing on the glass.
The nose is minimal. There's a hint of the malts here with a slight bread sweetness.
Taste - Wow. There's a lot more than the nose let on. Of course, it's a very malty beer. However, I also get a faint smoke flavor. I get some caramel on the back. I even get a creamy flavor here.
Smooth body. Creamy in a way, though there's no lactose here.
This is a very delicious beer. I am happy to have tried it.

No canning date (released on 8/29/20, so presumably canned within a few days of that date); consumed on 11/17/20
Pours a straightforward, glossy black body with the faintest mahogany edges at the surface and topped with a finger of creamy, tan foam; good head retention fades to a ½ finger of frothy cap, a dense, creamy collar, and chunky rings of tight, soapy lacing rounding the walls of the glass.
Aroma shows nutty malts and a briefly floral minerality upfront giving way to a brilliant roast, prickly, unobtrusive, and with a perfectly balanced char emanating throughout the bouquet; sweeter cocoa interjects in spots over time, while roasted hazelnut, ashy coffee and touches of yeast ease into the close.
Taste opens with a clean minerality quickly unfolding into rich cocoa overtaking the front of the profile; ashy roast with nutty undertones peaking to fresh coffee bean edges builds from the mid-palate onward, while a distant hop prickle brings light grass to accent the finish.
Mouthfeel offers a medium body sporting a viscous texture that meets a moderate, fluffy carbonation dispersing a mild grit easily across the palate; roast is ever-present but incredibly lithe, almost dusty, and remaining perfectly attenuated as it proceeds into a drying, rounded finish.
Robust, consumptive, and definitively easy on the palate, the complexity here is steady and constantly inviting; there is a stunningly composed level of craftsmanship bringing near-perfect sessionability to this style on full display; a masterclass in harmonizing varied richness and deft subtlety in (dark) lager form.

Huge fan of dark lagers, particularly the Euro version. Not only are they hard to find as imports, exceptionally rare in the craft brewery realm. Kudos to Fieldwork for promoting the style with this world class, delicious interpretation. This is an amazingly thick, expertly crafted, dangerously smooth dark lager sure to please any palate (other than a hop head addicted to IPA).

Like the brown ale of lagers. Rich nutty maltiness with a wonderful pairing of full, creamy body with a crisp, clean finish. Very well executed dark lager
