Just as Japan perfected the toilet, and Turkey perfected drunken 2am sidewalk fare, Belgium perfected the malty beer. While beers without huge hop aromas and/or fruit have become passé as of late, the Belgian Dubbel still reigns supreme with a veritable truck load of complex and rich flavors ranging from black currants and grilled pears to sun-dried dates, dutch cocoa, sweet malts, and burnt sugar, to more subtle notes of palo santo wood and spicy noble hops. Brewed with malts, candi sugars, and yeast from Belgium, Madalynn ticks all the boxes of what we want in a Dubbel with a moderate ABV, retrained hop character, and a flavor profile that melds and changes with the temperature of the beer. Contains: Barley, Belgian Candi Sugar, Hops, Water, and Yeast

Draft pour into a stemmed tulip glass at Fieldwork San Mateo. Deep, medium brown with a frothy head of tan foam. Aromas of burnt caramel, dark fruit, earthy and spicy hops. Taste continues with notes of brown sugar, cocoa, dried and dark fruit, subtle oak and alcohol warmth. Medium body with soft but moderate carbonation. Solid and drinkable dubbel.

Brown and red, lace of foam.
Cola, malt, no smell jumps out.
Vanilla, some sweetness that is a tinge fruit forward. Overall surprisingly muted, the alcohol's not apparent either.
Dialed back carbonation might help.

the taste is just right for a belgian. the feel is a little off. it has a watery thinness and lacks the syrupy weight that a belgian should have. the look is just right with a super dark caramel color, opaque and a tiny ring of micro foam. the smell is nice thought not very prominent. overall a very good and hight quality beer. rich, malty beers seem hard to find but fieldwork, one of my favorite breweries, and one of the best in sacramento, had an expansive selection upon my recent visit. highly recommend for fans of the style.
