A beer that has a dominant malty taste. This beer’s origins in a monk’s recipe are reflected in its heartiness. The Pope of Beers, Conrad Seidl, describes it as: “Almost black with a very slight red tone, a sensational, festive foam and truly extraordinary fragrance that at first summons up visions of greaves lard. The first taste is of mild fullness with an accompanying coffee tone, which becomes more dominant with the aftertaste. There is very little of the sweetness that is frequently to be tasted with doppelbock beer.” The Ayinger Celebrator has been ranked among the best beers of the world by the Chicago Testing Institute several times and has won numerous medals.

Rich dark fruits, subtle prunes, roasted wheat, toffee, coffee, molasses, licorice, sage, herbs, and roasted wood. Slightly creamy. Very fresh. Lingering herbs and coffee on the finish. A dry, woodsy doppelbock with great balance. A new go-to in the Porter/Stout/Doppelbock type category.

Great tasting beer. Not too heavy despite the look. The flavors pour through in the delicious double bock.

Poured from an 11.2-oz undated bottle into a tulip glass.
Look: Translucent dark brown with a ruby hint to it, a huge, fluffy tan head with good retention and plenty of lacing.
Nose: Deep, dark roasted malt, cooked brown sugar, a bit of dried dark fruit.
Taste: The attack follows the nose perfectly — a deep, strong flavor — and adds a bit of coffee. The finish continues with just the right amount of bitterness/dryness to balance the attack.
Mouthfeel: Medium thick, perfect carbonation.
Overall: Doppelbocks just don't get any better than this. I like it a lot of times, and it's especially perfect to pair alongside smoked baby back ribs with a Kansas City-type sauce.

330ml bottle. Pours a dark ruby brown with a big buff head. Smells of prunes, plums and raisins. Flavors start with a sweet malt richness that is balanced by a dry hoppy finish. Surprisingly astringent mouthfeel with medium to above average carbonation. I think this is the döppelbock standard. So good.

The beer that defines the Double Bock style. At least the best of the examples available world wide.
Clear, medium brown with glints of copper, dense and frothy slightly off white head, tenacious retention and cling of lace specks.
Rich aroma of dark chocolate and figs, notes of stone fruit and brown sugar.
Deeply complex flavors mingle - rich toffee dipped in chocolate, ripe apples and tart cherries, herbaceous hop character, grass, wet hay and arugula - just remarkable.
Very Porter-like, but distinctly German all around.
Body is a light medium despite the major malt presence, alcohol right in the mix adding to the depth and complex flavors all coming into balance.
The finish is warm, mildly boozy and dry with lingering hop bite on the tongue.
I miss the little red goat toy on a string that used to adorn every bottle.

96? Who am I to disagree? Not too boozy despite the 9.6 percent. Very dry, very special. And I can get it in Spain!

Copenhagen 22/4 2018. 33 cl bottle from Den Gamle Købmand, Skt. Annæ Plads, Kbh. K. Two Bucks giving a giant glass of Dark Beer a hug on the label. Kind of crowded label telling me about "Familientradition" in the sixth generation.
Pours very dark brown with a dense lightly beige head. Settles as a 0,5 cm thick layer of foam slowly dissipating. Very moderate lacing.
Aroma is medium intense. Sweetish, roasted dark malts, bitter coffee and alcoholic intensity.
Soft carbonation and medium thick oily texture.
Flavor is medium sweet followed by quite intense sour bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet and roasted intermingling with bitterness. Lingering.
Very nice German Dunkel Doppelbock.

Pours a clear dark reddish-amber color with one half finger of tan foam and minimal lacing, from a 330 ml bottle into a lager glass. Aroma of figs/stone fruit and melon with flavors of raisin, brown bread and ethanol. Mouthfeel is medium full.
