Bottled on date 23 Dec. 2015 with a best by date of 23 Dec. 2017.
The beer pours out into a snifter glass looking like used motor oil, a dark brown that is almost black. There is a 1/8" layer of dark tan head that soon recedes to a thin film on part of the liquid and a small ring around the glass. Sipping creates a line of foam that quickly turns into little spots of foam before they disappear. All the foam is gone by about midway through the beer.
The aromas are dominated by the yeast with some dark fruits but there is also some noticeable dark chocolate and some dark roasted malt in the background.
The flavors pretty much follow the nose but the individual components of the flavor profile seem to be playing a game of hide and seek, with first this one and then that one showing more of itself. There is also a bit of sweetness here but little or no bitterness or burnt malt flavor. Its hard to tell there's any alcohol in this one until its effects begin to create that feeling of warmth.
The mouth feel is on the full bodied side of medium with a nice smooth creamy feel and with some very light traces of carbonation. The unusually long finish seems actual seems as if it will be quite short at first as some of the various flavors begin sliding away into the background but there is still some of that dark roasted malt and dark chocolate that are present but barely noticeable in the back of the palate for quite a long time as the bitterness actually becomes more noticeable.
Overall, I definitely like this stout as it is well brewed with flavors are well balanced and an interesting combination. At this ABV it’s basically a one a night sipping beer that I’ll be having more of in the future. I’m am not sure why it took me more than 5 years to get around to sampling it. Especially since Weyerbacher has long been one of my preferred sources for big beers and also offered one of the most informative brewery tours I’ve ever been on. It definitely won’t be 5 years before I have the next one.

Black with a tiny tan head. Pleasant aroma:caramel, cinnamon, ripe fruit. Slightly bitter & salty. Flavors: everything the nose detected plus alcohol, spice & smoke. Feel: a bit thin with excellent carbonation plenty of alcohol to warm & tingle the tongue. Overall: very good.

Black color with brown head. Aroma of roasted caramel, coffee, dark fruits, and alcohol. Same combination in the taste with a touch of Belgian yeast. Smooth, roasted bitterness in the aftertaste. A good brew, but at some stage, the presence of alcohol shows up too much.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours jet black with a relatively thin layer of head. The nose is excellent. Malt balls, milk chocolate, slight note of burnt wood in a fire pit, light coffee, and a hint of black licorice.
The taste is fantastic. Mild sweetness, milk chocolate, roasted malts, dark German bread, charred wood, dark roasted coffee grounds, almonds, black licorice, and a mild smokey note.
This is such a well done stout. The mouthfeel is fairly thick and dry. The aftertaste is coffee grounds and roasted malts. I would love to compare this to a Belgian-style stout from Belgium.

Look: jet black with almost no head
Smell: mild aromas of roasted malt and something that I can't quite find the words for but is definitely reminiscent of Belgian quads and dark strong ales. Very mild overall, though.
Taste: follows the nose in both notes and mildness. There is a dry bitterness that is a bit unexpected in such a dark stout. Perhaps the widespread availability of barrel-aged beers has ruined me, but this just comes across as too mild and lacking in complexity to excite me.
Feel: nothing remarkable, a bit thin for the ABV but not bad.
Overall: I know this is an extremely well-regarded beer, but it just doesn't do it for me. It's not bad and I would drink it again if it were offered to me, but it's not something I would spend time or money seeking out.
