Millworks Brewery "Multigrain Grisette"
32 oz. crowler
$10 at the brewery on 09 September 2018 and sampled on 10 September 2018

Notes via stream of consciousness: "...brewed with barley, rye, wheat, and spelt". It's poured a very hazy yellow gold beneath a finger-thick head of creamy white foam. The aroma is spicy, peppery, fruity, floral, mineralish, earthy, and grainy sweet. It's fairly bold and quite enticing. On to the flavor... it's not surprisingly exactly as the aroma suggests it will be. Let me see if I can come up with anything that's different to be a little more specific. It's not as floral as the aroma suggests it might be, there's a clear note of wheat to the malt, and a touch of spelt, and there's a soft note of orange to it but that's it. It's not that bitter, the label lists 15 IBUs, but the delicate peppery spiciness balances it perfectly and it finishes dry and lightly spicy. I assume that's coming from both the rye and the yeast. I could easily see coming out of the mine after a long day and throwing one of these back before even getting cleaned up! - If you're not familiar with the history of grisette, it was originally brewed mainly for coal miners. In the mouth it's light-medium in body and gently crisp. The head has completely dropped by now, there's not even a collar left behind, but it did hold out for a long time. Unfortunately the minimal lacing that was left behind at the outset was about it too and now there's nothing left there either. Oh well, it's still a really nice beer that's superbly balanced and rounded, and surprisingly not overdone in any way. Including rye and spelt, as well as pink peppercorn and orange peel, you'd think it would be easy to over do it but it's all perfectly balanced and everything comes through nicely, which is the opposite of the other thing that could go wrong, having muddled or unclear flavors. Superb! I've had about a half dozen beers from Millworks at this point and they've all been very good. I highly recommend at visit as their food is just as good.
