Notes via stream of consciousness: OK, let's see, I loved their Split Rail Saison, so I'm hoping this will be just as good if not better. It's brewed with rye. It's poured a hazy golden-amber body beneath a full head of frothy off-white that's holding quite well and leaving some nice streaks and jagged splashes of lace as it settles. It's been a couple of minutes now, and it's got a pretty densely creamy, rocky looking head at this point. Pretty good appearance. The aroma is yeasty and malty - sweetish and peppery/spicy. As expected, the flavor follows with some added fruit (apple, pear, dried apricot, and perhaps some other background tropical fruit as well, papaya, mango, etc.), some mineralish earthiness, and a very sublime touch of acidity. It's not as sweet as the aroma suggested it might be, and the peppery finish leaves it quite dry - of course the rye itself is probably just as equally responsible for that as the yeast is. It's hard to tell though, you never know, but it's clearly present in the maltiness which I don't know how to describe any better than grainy and rye-like. It's not "golden", "doughy", or "biscuity" but more like a medium-dark rye bread. Median bitterness. Medium-bodied with a crisp carbonation. Overall it's a fairly straightforward saison with the rye giving it a little bit of extra character. Unfortunately the lacing that appeared to be pretty good upfront didn't quite hold up. That could be due to the filling of the crowler though, there was some airspace and it probably got sloshed around on the trip home, so I'll have to let it slide a bit. All of the beers I've had on-premesis had pretty good lacing - not fantastic, but very good - so I'm guessing this one is probably the same but just got a little beat up in transport. All of the beers that Levante makes are solid and fairly straightforward, but very well balanced and polished, and this one's no exception. It's very drinkable, although at just 5.4% ABV it should be (6% would be middle range for a standard saison).
