i have been trying to turn people on to english style beers for ages now, and i always tell them that a bitter isnt really bitter, its more of a grain driven beer generally speaking, which i think inherently turns a lot of people off from these, thinking they are going to be bitter. in this case though, the beer actually does have quite a bit more bitterness than i am accustomed to, and its also quite a bit stronger, i usually have these in the 4% abv range, but this one pushes up over 7%, slowing down whats usually a pretty poundable pint for me. the flavors are right, a nice maris otter sort of toasted english malt profile without too much sweetness to it in the taste, a nutty depth without being heavy, and then some english yeast character as well, subtle here but present. its the hops and in fact their bitterness that makes this a little different, and for me less classically true to style. there is a lot of peppery bite at the end, a little green too, its nice that the hops seem old worldy and the freshness is there, but they are cranked up a little bit more than i think most would call for in a beer like this. to me it throws it out of balance and lands it among the bottom of the ranks in terms of their current offerings. that said though, i have liked pretty much all the beers in here. not bad, but aggressive in a mellow style.

This ESB is venturing off into IPA land. Very hoppy, bitter ale, looks and smells like an IPA, velvety smooth, silky body and head. Hops hit you right up front, but malt make sit an easy drinker.
