This Sake Rice Saison won a gold medal at the California Craft Brewer's Cup. Koji and California short-grain rice were used in tandem with Ghost Town's house culture for fermentation. After a year on oak, a variety of fruity flavors such as grapefruit balance a creamy body. Bright acidity and a underlying funk indulge over and over.

After years of discussions and lots of work from Todd, BA finally this month separated Saisons into Belgian Saisons and Specialty Saisons. No sooner is that done, that Yokai comes along and bends those two categories. While Yokai has a few characteristics of Specialties, I agree with putting Yokai in the Belgian category. First of all, UnTappd styles it as a Farmhouse Saison. Second and more important, Yokai is food-friendly; despite being very dry for a saison.
Yokai Looks average in Belgian category, the barrel and mixed culture minimize lively Looks. However, Smells are a big citrus punch bowl and that starts the Taste attack. But the subtleties of the rice (uncommon, but fair game in a saison) and the barrel lead to a very tart and dry finish. I drank this with lunch (veggie soup and sandwich) and they all helped one another; passing the key Saison test. Medium-mouthed in a full style.
Despite being a purveyor mostly of IPAs and for helping to regenerate West Oakland, I give Ghost Town very good Overall Hugs. But as brewers, they also have taken a very innovative approach to this forever-evolving style.
