Collaboration with Forest & Main Brewing Company, Second District Brewing, Crime & Punishment Brewing Company and Hidden River Brewing Company

We took a simple, everyday American lager recipe and spiced it up in a way you might expect from this combination of brewers. We brewed it with toasted rice and German pilsner malt. The beer was spiced with kaffir lime leaf, German Huell Melon hops, fermented with European lager yeast, & finished with lime juice. It is an easy drinking lager that has a moderate lime aroma, sharp but gritty flavor, and slightly tangy & crispy finish.

Our collaboration with Forest & Main, Second District, Crime & Punishment, and Hidden River for Philly Beer Week 2019.

16oz can purchased from the fridge as part of a 4-pack for $11.99. Canned on 5/28/2019. Yeah, it's a bit old but I've had other cans of this recently and it's still good and worthy of a review.

Look: It looks like a typical American lager. Has the slightest bit of haze to it. Nice very light yellow straw color. Fluffy off-white head and effervescent bubblage coming up the glass. Nice lacing.

Smell: Has a nice aroma. Even though this beer is more than a year and half old and was not kept in the fridge, it has a very crisp and clean nose. Up front, I get a refreshing lime zest aroma, which is probably how I perceive the additions of lime juice and kaffir lime leaves. There's a bit of sulfur on the nose that is typical of lagers, along with a touch of skunkiness but it's not off-putting and actually really works here. Mildly sweet, biscuity malt aroma. Interesting that now I am getting an aroma of celery / celery salt - cool! Overall, the nose is very soft and pleasant.

Taste: Super crushable. I like that this lager has a tangy twist to it with the lime juice and kaffir lime leaves. It's very refreshing on the palate. At only 4% ABV, it's really easy to put this away. It really comes off like a typical American lager at first, but the finish is what really sets it apart. The lime juice comes through on the finish to make it very thirst-quenching. The bitterness is quite low and the beer is relatively dry. Easy drinking. You could easily overlook this one, but it's nice to appreciate how well it's made (just look at how long it has lasted!) and how delicious it is.

Feel: The mouthfeel is very light-bodied yet impactful considering the nature of this beer as a 4% AVB adjunct lager. Carbonation is the perfect level.

Overall: I obviously bought this a while ago as it was only brewed once for Philly Beer Week 2019. I liked it so much that I bought another 4-pack when I saw it still on the shelf with the intention of giving it to a friend, but I never got around to gifting it and it got stashed away in my house instead. I finally saw my friend recently and gave him a can. I really enjoy this beer. Too bad it's my last can!

One last trip, on NBS Week 763, back to NBS 752 for a huge collab. A five-way collab, no less. The CANQuest (tm) rejoices when CANfronted with such things!

From the CAN: "Weird & Fancy Lager"; "A 5-Way Collaboration"; "Everything We CAN't Drink We CAN"; "Rice-Based Lager Made With Kaffir Lime Leaf & Lime Juice".

I was curious to Crack! open the vent on this bad boy & see what the CANtents were like. I beCAN with a slow, gentle C-Line Glug which led to the formation of just under two fingers of foamy, soapy, rocky, bone-white head with modest retention. Color was Pale-Straw (SRM = 1 - 2) with NE-quality clarity. Nose definitely smelled of lime! Wow. Mouthfeel was thin & watery, but for a Lager, I could only shrug my shoulders. Okay. It tasted of lime, but not as strongly as on the nose. It was rather muted & nondescript as a whole. It had a faint cracker-y maltiness, but even that was kind of mild. Finish was semi-dry, but I felt unfulfilled, wishing for more Ooomph! Meh. YMMV.

Got in a trade with larryi86. 16 ounce can into lager glass, canned on 5/28/2019. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy pale golden straw color with a 1-2 finger dense and fluffy off white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big lightly tart lemon, lime, leaves, honeydew melon, berries, citrus peel/zest, cracker, white bread dough, wood, peppercorn, pine, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance of kaffir lime leaf, lime juice, citrus/fruity hops, and moderate pale malt notes; with big strength. Taste of big lightly tart lemon, lime, leaves, honeydew melon, berries, citrus peel/zest, cracker, white bread dough, wood, peppercorn, pine, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness; and citrus tang/tartness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart lemon, lime, leaves, honeydew melon, berries, citrus peel/zest, cracker, white bread dough, wood, peppercorn, pine, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and balance of kaffir lime leaf, lime juice, citrus/fruity hops, and moderate pale malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness and tart/tangy fruit balance. Slight lingering kaffir lime leaf astringency after the finish, but not overwhelming. Fairly crisp/clean finishing. Very clean on lager flavors, with minimal yeasty notes. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness, tart/tangy fruit, and carbonation. Medium-high carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy, and sticky/peel/rind/acid/tangy balanced mouthfeel that is good. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 4%. Overall this is a very nice fruited pale lager. All around nice robustness and balance of kaffir lime leaf, lime juice, citrus/fruity hops, and moderate pale malt flavors; very smooth and fairly crisp/clean/refreshing to drink with the modestly bitter/tart/tangy/drying finish; not overly aggressive/bitter. Very flavorful and not watery for the ABV. Very well balanced kaffir lime leaf, lime juice, and Huell Melon hop flavors; with a nice clean pils malt backbone. Minimal residual sweetness with crisp dryness. A very enjoyable offering, and well made experimental style example. Just wish it was less sharp and gritty on the kaffir lime leaf.
