Our beloved English barleywine ale aged in maple apple brandy barrels for 14 months then Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels for 29 months. We carefully selected and blended these barrels and the result is a version of COW that we are very proud of. It’s rich and enticing with notes of doctor pepper cola, rich fine tobacco, honey graham cracker dipped in chocolate and maple spice cake.

Bottle at share, coutesy of Reed. mahogany pour, small beige head slowly subsides to ring. Aroma is toffee, molasses and boozy. taste is sweet, brown sugar, leather, with the brandy barrel edging out the bourbon by a hair. Boozy, warm, but smooth.

poured from a 500mL red-waxed bottle (bottled December, 2022) into a SP “cheers” wine glass. pours like dark tea but settles a dark mahogany with a thin cardboard colored foam cap. maple, vanilla and bourbon on the nose. wonderful. taste follows with some caramel / toffee notes. this isn’t overly sweet though. in fact, it’s very well balanced with the barrels playing a huge role but you can tell the base beer is very well constructed and the whole package is executed to near perfection. it has a medium-full mouthfeel. the carbonation is appropriate and on the lower end but it just doesn’t sit on the tongue real heavily. perhaps making this fairly easy drinking for 15%. really good barleywine though. the maple apple brandy barrels work so well here to add to the toffee and caramel of the base barleywine.

Sweet caramel malty, chocolate covered raisins, and hint of spicy, bourbon barrel boozy nose on this one! Taste follows with those caramel and hint of chocolate vibes upfront...and then a boozy barrel finish. This is good, but the barrel needed to be a little more balanced and integrated here...it comes across the palate a little hot IMO. Pretty good.

The beer does not pour a lot of head. The beer itself is a dark brown color that is cloudy and opaque. It looks okay but nothing special.
The smell is very good. It has a good mix of different bourbon notes upfront and followed by a moderate alcohol note. The beer notes consist of a light burnt caramel note mixed with dark fruits such as prune.
The taste is pretty good. The bourbon note comes out front alongside a mix of the caramel and prune notes. There is an alcohol note in the finish.
The feel is good. It has a heavy but thin and body that makes it very drinkable. It has no carbonation and has a sticky finish to it.
Overall, a good beer and one worth having in order to complete the series.
