Eggshell white head. Lots of lace. Golden orange color.

This one is very hoppy and dare I say juicy. Bready malts, but so hop forward. Tropical with some citrus notes. Earthy and some floral notes. Not very bitter at all.

This is a surprise coming from Schells. I would have never guessed them to be the brewers of this. I really enjoyed it.

A hoppy lager from Schell's. I did not care for the last one they did called Arminus from a few years ago. Pale amber color lets you know there are no adjuncts in this beer. Heavy lacing is left down the glass. Hopped with a combination of new and old world hops. Aromas of earthy, herbal, and spicy with some over ripe citrus from Citra. The flavor does not work for me. Not a fan of Citra to begin with and does not meld well with the Hallertau. Some nice sweetness from the malt but this is dominated by the hops. Nice body and carbonation. Smooth texture.

Another from the Biergarten in a Box collection. American Pale Lager -- also known as "All Malt" lager, according to BA. Since Schell first introduced me to all malt lager back in the mid-80s, I can only have high hopes for this beer.

Best by 08/12/17 ink-jetted on the bottles neck, poured into my short Becher glass.

L -- Clear gold color with a dense, off-white head that holds up very well.

S -- Piny hops. Not what I expected. Vague bready malts and DMS with warming.

T -- Piny, resinous hops, some light citrus notes, grainy malt struggling to be recognized. Light spicy bitterness in the finish that lingers thru the aftertaste. Some bready malts become apparent with warming, but hop resins become heavier on the tongue with each swallow.

F -- Smooth to crisp mouthfeel with a light-medium body.

O -- Well, I guess a good way to "reinvent" all malt lagers is to make them taste like APAs or IPAs. Or you could just brew an APA and call it that. This trend of taking something traditional and rigging it for the hop head palate is getting old. If this beer had been labeled an APA I'd have probably given it a much higher score. It's definitely no Deer Brand.

Look: Poured into a vintage Schell Pilsner flute this one looks exactly as it should. It exhibits excellent clarity, a bright, pale golden color, and an enticing, voluminous meringue of off-white head. Altogether I'd say that it looks perfect!

But looks are tough to grade, and for the longest time here I've been grading to a strict "3" when a beer LOOKS the way that it should, and this one is no exception. I mean, shouldn't a beer look the way that it should look? Right color, right clarity, right apparent body and lacing and a big, billowing head? In this respect the look portion of the site's grading system strikes me as being almost totally superfluous. But I am waxing philosophical about something that doesn't matter very much to me in the first place.*

Smell: A BIG blast of Citra character propels this one into the hop-lover's erogenous zone (or Phantom Zone, or wherever hop lovers feel most comfortable.) Mission accomplished! The lovers of this particular hop varietal are gonna flip their wig. The Hallertau Blanc hop adds its own dimension of course, and I expect the same is true on the palate..

Taste: Sweet-spicy zesty Citra explodes on the first sip and takes you on a magic carpet ride of hop goodness. No really, this one exhibits all of the hallmarks of that hop, and does so in style. And that's coming from a guy that ain't wild about Citra! There's a prickly sensation on the mid-palate in addition to the aromatic aspect, a prickly, grapefruit zest married with a drier more astringent quality, plus bitterness and an impression of tropical fruit . . .

Again, while I'm not the biggest fan of this hop variety or of "hoppy" ale and lager styles (IPA / NE IPA, and IPL) I *DO* like what's going on here. It's firing on all the intended cylinders. A fruity/tropical spicy-sharp (and lightly bitter), dry-yet juicy all malt lager. SAINTS BE PRAISED!

Feel: Light, dry, and exceptionally drinkable, just as I prize the most in my favorite style (Pils), and yet it's got a rather unconventional hop profile -- for a "boring lager." Altogether -as far as mouthfel and drinkability goes- this one's got it in spades. It almost feels "too light." Almost, but there's a touch of warming alcohol back there . . .something in the upper range of Pils and Pale Ale. So is it "dangerously-drinkable?"

Maybe! The ABV is not known to me (I read a lot about upcoming beers before they are released, so I either have forgotten what it is or want to believe that it's higher than average) but it's already been entered as an IPL over at the big mobile social media platform, so take that revelation in stride (or with a grain of salt if you prefer.)

One thing's for sure: Citra fans will love this beer, and overall I'd say it's worth seeking out to gauge it against others of like-minded, wild stylistic abandon. : )

* At least you know why my average rating ends up being lower than most, as well as why my rDev is higher.

Of course, if a beer LOOKS bad it definitely -should- be rated below average, and I do rate according when that turns out to be the case. But it's rare: These days even an infected and wildly off-style beer might end up looking above average!
