The Pilsner is a revered style among brewers, known for its simplicity that hides a complex challenge. Unlike beers that rely on bold ingredients to make a statement, the Pilsner’s beauty lies in its subtlety and balance. Technische (tek•nih•shuh) German-Style Pils embodies this tradition.
With a single type of barley malt and hop variety, water, and yeast, our brewers showcase the essence of true craftsmanship. Each sip is a testament to decades of brewing expertise, delivering a beer that tastes refreshingly familiar yet extraordinarily refined. Prost!

Technische from Old Nation. 16 fl oz can picked up at Horrocks, Grand Rapids, MI, 23/08/25 - $ 3.80 (including tax and deposit)/$ 0.237/fl oz. Reviewed 29/09/25, review 3599. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Stamped on the bottom of the can “BEST BY 07/05/25.” On room temperature shelf at store, stored at home at 40 degrees F. Served at 50.1 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature is 55.5 degrees F.
Appearance – 4
First pour – Pale Straw (SRM 2), slight (chill) haze.
Body – Pale Straw (SRM 2), clear. Under direct light, same. When rear-lite, same.
Head – Small (Maximum four cm, aggressive center pour). White, high density, average retention, leaving a 0.8 – 1.4 cm jagged rocky crown and a complete rocky cap.
Lacing – Good. Wide, irregular three-dimensional band of near microscopic to medium bubbles, slowly devolving to torn curtains.
Aroma – 4 – Very hop forward, earthy, no malt, no alcohol. .
Flavor – 4 – Moderately bitter with no malt, no alcohol (5.2 % ABV, according to the label). No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. No gastric warming.
Palate – 4 – Medium: Watery: Soft but titillating carbonation.
Style: Sort of follows the style guidelines as condensed by BA, but lacks any balancing sweetness.
Final impression and summation: 4 Uncredited art work. One malt, one hop, one beer. Definitely appeals to my tastes – I prefer bitter over sweet.

"Best by 7/5/25"; drank 6/15/25 @ the Yarchives.
See-through dull yellow appearance.
A rough pour yielded a big white head; a thick curtain of lacing remained.
Soap, lemon & pine notes in the nose.
Medium thin mouthfeel.
Lemon & dry soap flavors up front; pine notes on the finish.
Dry and easy enough to drink.

My first lager from this 17 year old whose flagship is NEIPAs. The other brews I had from them were two Belgians: a challenged saison six years ago and a quite good Wit. Old Nation is obviously versatile and their website claims them to be in the German tradition and Technische proves that. A very fulfilling lager to have with lunch, just enough hops to make an average lunch into a success. For all three brews and bringing brewing culture to a remote hamlet in Michigan, I give ONBC some very good Overall Hugs.
Technische Looks only slightly above average; could have a lasting foam. Smells are fine, mostly malt with hops in the back of my nose. Tastes are balanced; but almost not, as the hops enter early and keep pushing the malts out of the way. (But that is probably what the market wants, so who am I to knock it in my rating.) Medium-mouthed. Prost !
