We joined forces with Casa Agria Specialty Ales in California to bring you this beast of a barleywine.

Unbeatable was brewed with coconut and vanilla, double-mashed, and boiled for 8 hours resulting in a deceptively smooth and sweet elixir.

Had on tap. Very dark brown with a light brown cap. Big coconut and vanilla in the nose with barley and booze backing. Taste starts with a coconut and vanilla flair before typical barleywine flavors take over but much sweeter from the long mash I presume, molasses and toffee stand out before barley snarl on finish. Feel is thick, heavy, sticky, slightly syrupy from the sweetness, and warm. A dessert barleywine. The wife liked it

5-ounce pour enjoyed at Great Notion's Beaverton location. Served in a small snifter.

Look:
Muddy, dark rust-colored, and headless, this is not a particularly attractive beer. There's a minimal ring of foam at the edge of the glass, fed by tiny bubbles that rise slowly through the murk. No lacing, but the beer coats the glass and leaves rather impressive legs.

Smell:
Huge vanilla, caramel, and coconut with an edge of toasted oats. Smells kind of like fruitcake and kind of like a fruit pie with a crumb topping. Sweet as a candy bar.

Taste:
The nose tells you everything you need to know, yet is still an inadequate warning for Unbeatable's massive sweetness. The beer leads with huge vanilla flavor, caramel takes 2nd place, and coconut handily nabs the bronze medal. There's some good, nourishing oat flavor in here, but unfortunately I don't taste any of the rye that was also mentioned in the grain bill. Notes of milk chocolate, carmelita bars, dates, candy corn, butterscotch, and pineapple upside-down cake complete with maraschino cherries. Long, sweet finish of butterscotch pudding with vanilla whipped cream on top.

Feel:
Heavy, syrupy, chewy. Soft carbonation manages to cut through the viscosity to give this corpulent beer some shape. Alcohol burns in the heart of this beer like embers under the ashes of a campfire.

Overall:
The Great Notion newsletter described this beer as a "full GN pastry treatment with...oats, coconut, and vanilla...a silky smooth caramel elixir...", and it certainly lives up to that depiction. I gave the highest score to the nose because it tells you exactly what this beer is. Great Notion/Casa Agria Unbeatable is one of the sweetest beers I've ever tried, and I found it a challenge to finish a 5-ounce pour. But if you have a sweet tooth and you like vanilla, caramel, and coconut, you may find this beer unbeatable.

Nice deep brown barleywine appearance with a slight tan head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is a slightly sweet mild vanilla and coconut. Taste is a moderately sweet blend of caramel, vanilla, and coconut. Nice feel
