Synesthesia started as an experimental DIPA from our Alberta R&D brewery. The goal was to understand how Phantasm powder interacts with a thiol boosting yeast strain and dry hopping. We loved the results of the different aromatic profile from the hops and the intense dry hop character. Hops we thought we were familiar with showed themselves in a new way. We knew we had something with Synesthesia, and then our first production batch earned a Gold medal at the Oregon Beer Awards.
Let’s give you what you really want to read about though. The hops!! We hammered this murky DIPA twice with two early stage dry hops, and heavy doses at that of Nelson Sauvin and Motueka. Hops that normally display sensory notes of lemon and lime, or white wine and passion fruit take on new scents. The yeast and Phantasm powder work together to coax out intense tropical guava and mango flavors and aromas in the special beer.

Appearance: Pours a completely hazy (10% clarity) medium to light and pale yellow color with a strong white head. SRM of 7-8. (4.00)
Aroma: Aromas of orange, pineapple, tropical grape juice. (3.75)
Flavor: Flavors of orange, sweet pineapple, some tropical grape juice. Juicy and sweet. (3.75)
Feel: Heavier body, lower, carbonation, juicy, heavy, sweet. (3.25)
Compared to Grimm Artisanal Ales Oracle 1/26: Pours similar, stronger aromas. Less citrus zest, grapefruit, white grape. More pineapple, sweet grape juice. Cleaner.
Compared to WeldWerks Extra Juicy Bits 1/26: Pours more pale. Similar aromas. More bright pineapple, sweet grape juice. Less resinous orange, pine. Similar, but winner is WeldWerks.
Overall: Great Notion Synesthesia. Citra/Nelson but with some Motueka and Phantasm. Right upfront lots of pineapple and grape juice on the aroma. On the flavor it's a juice bomb like you'd expect. Juicy, sweet, lacking much of a body. Alcohol shows and overly sweet, cloying juice here. Hops aren't everything in an IPA. When I'm buying the best IPAs I can find, have to keep the standard high. I'd pass on this one from Great Notion.

Tropical, light melon and light white wine hop aroma and flavor with a touch of hop funk. Motueka not too powerful. Juicy ! Good balance with little to no bitterness. Medium bodied and fairly smooth.

A big, expressive, and pretty delicious NE hazy double IPA. Milky golden haze on the pour with a hefty off-yellow head. Lots of tropical fruit, dry-hopped to the gills...coconut is strong on the palate, as well as zippy notes of lime and grassy hops...funky, bitter grapefruit, yuzu fruit...decent bitterness, chalky mouthfeel from the dry hopping.

The beer is yellow, very hazy. The foam is coarse and thin, disappears very quickly. It smells like mango and orange, but the smell is very subtle. The beer is full bodied, it’s bold, bittersweet, very lightly slaty and tart. It feels jammy, smoothie in mouth, and the flavor/aroma is stronger than it’s smell. You can sense the phantasm right away, which is a vibrant fruity experience. I can sense a umami like sodium? The phantasm is like “freshness” in a newly peeled white grape, a fresh mango, it is zesty and bursty, feels a bit pungent at ending. This beer is interesting, the smell is very light, but the flavor and aroma is pretty bold. There’s pungent orange peel oil, mango and orange smoothie, pine needle, newly mowed lawn, bitter grapefruit, nutmeg spice, light barn-funk yeast, perilla leaf (you can find them in Korean market), lemon (not tart) aromas. The aroma profile is pretty complex in this beer. Although the beer is pungent, at second half and ending, but the hop burn is not too bad. Compares to the beer with hops Cryo, this beer is less pungent and the hops aroma shows more facets. There’s fragrance of lemon peel garnish in mouth, with tiny bits of stings. As a 8.2% ABV DIPA, it is very easy to drink, and pretty dry (I feel it’s more and more bitter after couple of sips). I like the strong presence of hops and yeasts in the beer, the added salt give the beer a bolder palate. The bottom of my pour has strong hops oil’s pungent aroma, it also taste hoppier. (TBH, this pungent experience is like drink a CBD to me.) Hoppy but not very weedy, more like citrus peels’s pungent and zesty.
