Canned on 5/26/20; consumed on 6/14/20
Pours a motor-oil black body capped with a finger and a half of fast-rising dark mocha foam, quickly fizzing out to a nonexistent cap, barely-there collar, and no lacing.
Aroma offers a pleasantly attenuated roasted coffee into bitter cacao upfront, with more nuances tones of earthy, semi-sweet cinnamon developing over time; slight tobacco and smoked toffee are touched with tinges of vanilla and hazelnut the bouquet quietly expands on the close.
Taste opens with notes of burnt coffee grounds and bittersweet cacao overpowered by a roasty acidity softened slightly through the mid-palate with touches of vanilla; the back end/finish feature some sweeter, nutty tones up against what is now a bitter, leftover char/acridity.
Mouthfeel brings a light-medium, oily body with a mild, silky carbonation; consistent and smooth with a fleeting sticky texture across the mid-palate, a rapidly building acrid bitterness brings dryness, with touches of underlying acidity coming into focus on the finish.
The profile here is increasingly muddled, and while there are glimpses of hopeful expression, no element shines through the overwhelmingly bitter malts which threaten to take over almost entirely. There's potential at first, but it quickly goes downhill, and can be safely labeled as a miss for me.
