Canned on 5/26/21; consumed on 7/1/21
Pours a heavily fogged and glossy golden burnt orange body capped with a finger and a half of dense, creamy, eggshell-white foam; decent head retention leaves a slight layer of rocky cap, a moderate, frothy collar, and chunks of webby soapy lacing strewn around the walls of the glass.
Aroma bursts forth with waxy white grape and an underlying boozy wisp overtaken by bright key lime; grassy kiwi is given weight by touches of toasted honey over the middle into a more saturated medley of tropical resins and capped with a candied peach close.
Taste opens with spiced candied peach doused in pineapple syrup and balanced with a heavy undertone of mossy hop resins; takes on an increasingly honeyed tone over the mid-palate, culminating in semi-sweet guava smoothie, lychee, a tinge of banana peel, and mushy papaya to finish.
Mouthfeel offers a medium body alongside a more subdued, lower-end carbonation, a boggy weight and budding warmth coating the palate in a subliminal grit as an increasingly slick and resinous texture develops past the mid-palate; an easy fluff depresses into the back end before a split-second tingle precedes an almost stunningly innocuous finish for a beer of this ABV.
With a level of flavor intensity apropos of its quadruple-IPA billing, the beer as a whole is surprisingly unabrasive, a sleek body tempering boozy edges to allow the heavily expressive tropical fruit profile to shine through; 12% might be a bit much, but Long Live does what it needs to for the resultant fine, hoppy sipper.
