Tallboy purchased at the brewpub's retail store; best before Feb 7 2016 and served well-chilled.
Pours a translucent golden-amber colour, not unlike their regular-strength lager. Seated atop is one finger of compact, creamy white head that displays decent retention, lasting the better part of five minutes before wilting away totally. A ring of lace is produced, along with a thin collar and a few foamy wisps. The aroma is fairly neutral and clean; pale wheaty malt sweetness and some doughiness, with a hint of banana.
Very similar flavour profile to their Long Pond Lager, though it is expectedly lighter, and somewhat less sweet. The malts come off grainy and doughy, with the wheat contributing some noticeable banana esters. There is some honey/caramelized sugar sweetness as well, with a touch of grassiness; both of these flavours linger briefly into the aftertaste. Light-bodied, with lively carbonation that assertively prickles the palate, resulting in a very crisp, refreshing mouthfeel. Would do fine as a summer thirst-quencher, or for washing down typical pub grub.
Final Grade: 3.41, a passable B-. Bayside's Light Lager is nothing to write home about, though technically speaking I would consider it an above average example of this style. The flavour profile is very similar to that of their flagship lager, but this one's livelier mouthfeel and toned-down sweetness fall more in line with my pale lager preferences. Pretty well-made, and acceptable for what it is; I wouldn't turn one down, but I wouldn't seek it out, either.
