Bourbon Barrel Aged English Barleywine conditioned on Orange, Star Anise and Madagascar Vanilla Bean.
Warm caramel and toffee malts, bright orange citrus, candied fruit, and smooth vanilla flavors make this a truly special winter treat.

Pours a clear, copper colored hue, dark amber in the glass; dense, slow-rising carbonation; thick, long-lasting head, sudsy yet rocky. A very interesting aroma; big notes of fresh pine and peppermint along with a bold malt sweetness, eventually switches to less pine and peppermint, more caramel. The taste follows along the lines of the smell; malt sweetness blended with an alluring mint and anise character; cherry cough drop; sherry. Heavy body yet a bit airy in texture; a bit sticky on the palate; a slight alcohol bite.
This was the fourth mystery beer I got from @micada for the first BeerAdvocate Barleywine / Stout BIF. Reading the ingredients, the orange zest greatly explains some of the powerful smell and taste sensations. The star anise was fairly apparent. The mouthfeel would be the weakest part of the beer, a bit weak for the style, in my opinion, but otherwise a unique experience.

A: Ruddy dark amber, cake-like tan head.
S: Orange zest, raw cookie dough, black licorice ropes. Brown sugar, molasses builds as it warms.
M: Med-full body, Confection like sweetness with high carbonation to keep from cloying. Good warmth from ABV.
T: Treacle, licorice. Bright burst of orange, Grand Marnier. The bitter citrus and licorice keeps me from liking this more, and frankly, overpowers the malt. If it appealed to my palate more I'd forgive the break from style, but its two brash flavorpoints are just too dissonant.

L: Poured from a tallboy can to a pint glass. Had a bright amber color and a slightly hazy consistency. There was a quarter inch of foamy, off white head that quickly dissipated. Not much lacing to speak of.
S: An interesting aroma citrus fruit, spices, malt, caramel, and hops.
T: Tasted of a bit of caramel (quite sweet), a decent shot of hops (especially in finish; not an obnoxious amount), lots of citrus fruit (orange zest - a dominant ingredient), spice (the advertised star anise), and some malt (a subtle presence). An unusual flavor (for the style), but quite lively and complex. Pretty tasty.
F: A fair amount of carbonation with a smooth and very dry finish. Medium-bodied.
O: This is a beer that won't please everyone, especially purists, but if you want something offbeat, give it a whirl.
