I know this beer is at least four years old; I picked it up while working in Boise. I did not see any bottle date or know much else. I am using a tulip glass and serving the beer at 42 degrees. The pour created a frothy, creamy, off-white, one-fingered head with fair retention. The somewhat quick dissipation left no lacing on the glass. The beer's color is SRM 28 dark ruby red with mahogany hues and semi-transparent. The overall appearance is average for this style.
Nosing the glass, I smell funky, acidic, light barnyard, dried cherries, and oak. Nosing the glass again, I detect floral esters, port, grass, phenolic, and white pepper. I did notice a light citrus and vinous.
The flavor starts with port wine, wood acid, and citrus. Sipping the beer again, I noticed floral, funkiness, dried cherries, plums, toasted malts, grass, and herbal notes. The barrel aging hits on the backend and needs to be more cohesive with the beer style. I was expecting something else from a Flanders ale.
The mouthfeel is tart and finishes dry. The body is medium and has medium-plus carbonation.
Unfortunately, the flavors of this beer are a letdown. The promising aromas led me to believe this was going to be a sensory delight. However, the barrel aging seems to have done little to enhance the beer. It tastes more like a wine, with prominent oak and sour notes. Overall, this beer didn't quite hit the mark for me. While I didn't detect any off-flavors, the beer's taste was odd and out of place.

750ml bottle from Toby. Copper colored pour, flat, dull. Tart, funky aroma, yeasty. Taste brings some notes of stone fruit., Belgian yeast, funk. Silky, smooth.
