Tallboy from the LCBO; dated Feb 12 2018 and served barely chilled. Reviewed from notes.
Pours crystal clear at first, but gets cloudier once I top off the glass with the dregs; the liquid itself has a medium golden hue, and is capped off with one finger of frothy white head that seeps ever downward. After several minutes' time, it has been reduced to a foamy collar surrounding a wispy-thin cap. No lacing; looks fine, but nondescript. Some grainy, bready sweetness comes through on the nose, as do yeasty hints of banana, clove, orchard fruit and peppery spice. Nothing unusual for the style.
The same is more or less true of the flavour profile, which isn't much different from the aroma. Grainy, slightly bready pale malts provide a moderate amount of background sweetness, with flavours of ripe banana accented by minor hints of lemon zest and apple skin. Yeasty, spicy notes of clove and pepper arise on the back end, with some mildly grassy hop bitterness helping to dry out the palate; these flavours thin out and fade during the aftertaste. Medium in body, with moderate carbonation levels that give this serviceable Belgian-style pale ale a weak bite. Not at all difficult to dump down the hatch, though sadly I can't think of any compelling reasons to repeat this one in the future. Reaching for compliments, I suppose the abv is well hidden, and the price is quite fair.
Final Grade: 3.48, a B-. Bobcaygeon's Firestarter is far from being one of the most interesting or memorable saisons I've ever tried. Very basic stuff for the style, with little to no complexity (and certainly no funk whatsoever). About as safe as a saison can get, with few individually distinguishing characteristics to speak of - pick one up and decide for yourself, but personally I can't see many seasoned BAs being all that impressed.

Sortlived head that settles to nothing and goes laceless. Plain yellow gold. Boozy, yeasty nose, some fruitiness. Sweet up front, boozy, yeasty. Sime pithy orangeness, bitter hops, booziness. Lingering metellic character. Unremarkable.
