Had on tap at the brewery.
On arrival 1 finger of off white head was present that slowly became a bit foamy and receded to a very solid ring and covering of foam. Solid lacing left. Body is a clear brownish burgundy-red.
Aroma is immediately more hoppy than a traditional malty red-ale, with a citrus peel fruitiness and slight darkness, before giving into a nutty, caramel sweet malt body. Slight English yeast character.
Flavor follows the aroma, but definitely brings more malt and it actually quite balanced. The American hop flavor of citrus and dank is still there but it melds nicely with the sweet and nutty toasty and roast malts.
Feel is definitely full, and even fuller than the 7.5 ABV farmhouse ale, with a full, long, and malty finish. A slight dryness does creep in, but that doesn't change the fullness of this beer.
Overall, based on the higher IBU number on the menu I expected the hoppier red ale, but what I didn't expect was for this to work as well as it did. Tastes good, and is very balanced, while maintaining an interesting hop flavor with the sweet malts.
