Odd Breed Wild Ales

On tap at the brewery. Hazy golden. Smells of strong oak, earthy yeast and hops, some lemon acidity. Tastes of tart lemon, bready malt for a moment, then grain and wheat take over. Strong oak throughout. Light body and crisp. Excellent barrel character augmenting a very tasty Saison. Odd Breed's best so far.

 

my first beer from these guys, been hearing all kinds of good things, who knew i would have to travel to montana to finally try a beer from florida?! its tasty, but its significantly less distinctive than i was wanting it to be, even approaching uninteresting on the fermentation side, which was quite the opposite of what i was expecting, its lactic with just a little new funk to it, tart and pretty clean really, nothing rustic or wild about it regardless of how its made, and the lack of uniqueness here hurt it a little for me, even if its good still. its pale orange from the tap, not much head after a second, although nice and fizzy to drink. the grain base is a cool foundation for this, not broken down by the acidity to me at all, and giving some of the harvesty farmhouse character i am missing from the yeast. light stone fruit in the mix, a white wine tannic thing from the oak, and a little acetic sharpness as it warms. i guess i am let down because not only is the ferment kind of generic for what this is, but its not even all that well refined, like even with an unexciting yeast profile the beer could still be improved objectively, and that always feels weird in a 12 dollar small pour, i know the bottles are just as expensive too. in the end it was cool to try this, finally get introduced to odd breed, but i had way higher hopes. still, i am intrigued by what they do and hoping to get the chance to drink more of them...

The beer pours a cloudy golden straw color, amber hues with minimal white head that offers no lacing. The aroma is great, tons of citrus, nice funk and fairly buggy with strong cereal grains, peppercorn, some peach and soft oak. The flavors are good, tart citrus and some tropical fruit, soft oak, lots of buggy funk, pale dough, berry fruit with a touch of green apple and hints of vinegar with some lightly spicy peppercorn. The mouthfeel is good, coating and crisp medium body, tart throughout with a dry finish.

Verdict: A very nice wild saison from Odd Breed. Bright, refreshing and nicely complex.

 

 

Pours a hazy yellow. Tastes of grass, mild hops, lemon, bread and malt. Solid brew with hints of the French oak puncheons it was brewed in. Solid saison.

 

 

 

This one pours a slightly hazy golden yellow color, with a small head and lots of lacing.

This smells like sharp lemon, zest, and rind, citrusy acidity, grassy funk, wheat, and pilsner bready malt.

This is a really good flagship saison- it's super drinkable, with an intriguing but drinkable level of funk. There's lots of citrusy character, with a sharp and biting grassy funk, and lots of lemony acidity.

This is pretty light bodied, and very, very drinkable, with a thirst-quenching feel to it.

This is my first beer from Odd Breed- I had been hearing about them for a while, so it's nice to jump in a try an impressive beer.
