Tall can, 2-27-17
Pours with a medium haze, light khaki cap, lasts nicely and then leaves quality looking, film, collar and sheeting.
Sniff reveals light resiny hops and ....chocolate...recheck the can...hmm "chocolate IPA". Interesting
Tasty enough, with more hoppy goodness, but there it is again..chocolate...hmmm interesting...different...interesting...but in the end not my favorite ....

On tap at the brewery. Clear golden. Big white head. Smells of chocolate and a little citrus. Some sweet malts. And butter. Tastes of grapefruit hops and chocolate. Almost like coffee flavor when the hops and chocolate combined. The diacetyl is hidden in the flavor until the back end. Low bitterness with a bit of sweet maltiness. Medium body. I didn’t get the diacetyl the first time I tried it, but now I do. Bummer.

Beautiful looking beer, healthy cap of white foam with strong retention and lace. Lightly hazed deep gold body - not massively cloudy or full of particles. After drinking a few of these I find the chocolate notes, which are minimally sweet and more of the bittersweet or even baker's variety, vary widely in presence depending on the temperature of the beer. At first I had a hard time picking them out (on tap); from the can the chocolate popped out almost immediately.
Overall this is a fairly dry brew with medium bitterness. Interesting interplay of chocolate and grapefruit (and subtler tropical fruit and resinous) flavors. Not much malt character to speak of. Perfect medium feel and carbonation from the can.
The collaboration between Civil Society and Finback seems like a natural. Much more familiar with the latter but they both seem to share an affinity for artful and adventurous ipas.
