Lovely IPA, without the bitterness of Superflux's Colour and Shape or Manana. Highly drinkable. Their most popular beer according to the bartender, and for good reason. A solid IPA, with an almost watery character when the palate is blown out from ultra hoppy beers, but when fresh it has a delightful bitter character. Something I would drink quite a bit of... if I was fortunate enough to live in Vancouver.

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Jul 8 2024 and served barely chilled. Listed at 6.5% and brewed and canned by Superflux in Toronto, ON.

Pours a clear medium golden colour with a fair bit of sandy sediment hovering throughout its body. Rising to the surface is two fingers of soapy, foamy white head that lasts for five minutes, give or take; it leaves behind a lovely arcing pattern of lace, along with a frothy collar and filmy cap. I'm getting dank, piney & earthy qualities on the nose, as well as some wheaty, bready pale malts, with fruity hop notes adding further depth to the aroma. Orange, peach and grapefruit; maybe even some papaya and passion fruit.

Good stuff; fruit-forward flavour profile that includes mango, grapefruit, orange, peach and passion fruit, as well as a golden syrup sweetness. Dank, earthy, pine resiny bitterness asserts itself on the back end, culminating with a moderately bitter, resiny finish with hints of citrus and grape-ade; slightly acidic. Medium-full in body, with weak carbonation that gently nudges against the surface of the palate; smooth, soft mouthfeel with OK drinkability.

Final Grade: 4.1, an A-. For this hophead, happiness is a glass of Happyness. This can is four months old and still drinking splendidly - sure, it'd likely be better fresh, but it's the LCBO so what're ya gonna do? On the plus side, Superflux can apparently produce their stuff locally for the Ontario market - an act of impressive logistical foresight that I genuinely hope will pay off for this excellent BC brewer. I look forward to trying more Superflux brews in the near future - cheers!

473ml can served cold into a pint glass. LCBO purchase for $4.95 CDN. Canned July 8, 2024. Listed at 6.5% ABV now.

Appearance - Hazy honey brown colored beer with lots of gold highlights. A finger plus of foamy white head and good retention time. Not much in the way of lacing.

Smell - Floral esters, sweet citrus, stone fruit and some caramel malt. Well rounded and very good intensity.

Taste - Medium bitterness, lots of grapefruit with some orange. Trace stone fruit and backed by a solid caramel malt. Grain in the background. Classic IPA.

Mouthfeel - Medium-full bodied, crisp carbonation, semi-dry finish.

Overall - Just a really solid, old-school IPA. Very happy to have access to just a little bit more of the some of the better BC breweries in Ontario.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a slightly hazy, medium golden amber with three finger white head with great retention and solid lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, citrus and dank ops, orange, grapefruit, light stone fruit and a touch of pine. Flavor is mildly caramel malt, citrus and dank hops, grapefruit, mixed stone and tropical fruit, orange and catty dankness; moderate bitterness in the finish, but a bit more developing in the lingering piney and citrus rind aftertaste. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. Appears to be one of the modern West/East Coast hybrid IPAs with both citrus and pine as well as mixed fruit including tropical notes. The mixed fruit portion was rather muddled, with grapefruit initially dominant and pine and grapefruit rind in the finish. The herbal hop flavor seems muted and perhaps this can has some age on it; to their credit, the can is date marked, with 80% crystal clear except the month, which was sprayed over the edge with a leading 0 and a blob. It was brewed in 2024 anyway. It has enough West Coast and dank character for me to enjoy it, but I'll look for a fresher can on my next trip up north.

Appearance: Looks decent. Starts with a finger and a half of head that made some mild lace body shows steady carbonation is a semi-translucent gold haze.

Smell: Overwhelming grapefruit with maybe some peach and pine notes. Ample potency, but this is unmistakable high hop IPA hoppiness alright.

Taste: I think they were trying to make a hybrid of NE IPA and West Coast IPA here. You get that initial faux orange and peach of a New England IPA which a hint of doughy malt in the background. That's the part I don't mind, and then it's punctuated by Grapefruit, Pine and Earth to a level I don't enjoy that simply destroys things. That said, I appreciated that this will certainly be someone's cup of tea, just not mine.

Mouthfeel: I was really hoping for this to end up clean, or maybe slightly more of the citrus side of things, but no luck. Bitter pine with weak echos of grapefruit and orange that throw things off more then make for something nice. Carbonation helps out the whole beer, and the transitioning is a fairly sharp turn, but at least seemingly by design.

Drinkability: Medium bodied, which I suppose is good. The hops are not leaving this one as desirable for me, as that lingering in the aftertaste makes destined for the drain at the 2/3rd done mark. There is something there resembling refreshment at the start of the beer, but it quickly scurries away.

Final Thoughts: Certainly not my definition of "Happyness" but this offering is certainly someone's definition. Look, I make it no secret that IPA is not a style that I care for, but it would be the greater disservice to avoid them entirely. Beer should be about trying new things, even things you know you aren't going to be comfortable with, and in this case, this was still a good experience. If you find NE IPA hitting a ceiling (as it does for me) and you want it to hit a bitter end, this may be the stuff for you.

Single can - says 6.5% on same.
Pours a slightly less than clear bright golden with massive creamy white head.
Nose is fruity with notes of mango, peach and generic citrus - some pine and just a hint of sweatiness.
There is a fruity sweetness on the palate - tropical and peach, citrus - but an herbal and piney bitterness as well - hints of onion and a touch dank.
Smooth medium mouthfeel with active carbonation and a nice finishing bittersweetness. New school WC IPA done well.

Pours golden yellow with white fluffy head on draught in tall glass pint at The Keg in Vancouver on Granville Island (next to Granville Brewery while they were on strike so popped in for some brews). Bold crips notes of pine with lightly sweet malty base. Beautiful, simple, bright and crisp and packed with hops make this Canadian west coast IPA at 7.5% ABV a truly amazing IPA.

Served on tap at Royal Dinette. Pours a deeply cloudy, hazy straw yellow. Citrus, pine and dank aroma. Taste opens up with passion fruit and spice joining the citrus. Medium body, creamy smooth with fine but moderate carbonation. A better hazy IPA with more complex fruit than just juicy orange citrus.
