473 mL can from Superstore; dated May 24 2023 and served slightly chilled. Part of their Extension series.
Pours a clear pale golden colour, with one finger of loose, soapy white head rising to the surface. It fizzles within a couple of minutes' time, eroding down to a frothy collar and some wispy patches on the surface; it also produces some lace as you sip at the glass. It smells mainly of lemon juice - i.e. tart and citrusy, with faint hints of grain. Not bad so far.
It's pretty good - rather understated and low-key for a shandy, thanks to the fact that they didn't dump a bunch of sugar in here. This allows the grainy malts and honeycomb sweetness of the underlying light lager to poke through the authentic lemon flavours. I'm getting an oily, zesty, lemon rind flavour, with hints of juice tartness on the back end. Light in body, with low carbonation that softly rolls along the tongue; feels a little slick, but goes down smooth.
Final Grade: 3.79, a B+. Life Gave Us Lemons is described as a shandy on the back label, and I must say it's one of the few shandies I've ever had that *isn't* over-sweetened to high hell. I like that, and I also like the fact that it isn't gassy/over-carbonated, like many of the macro equivalents. I'm still not sure I'd take this over a good grapefruit radler, but it's quite tasty & refreshing in its own right - the lemons are used effectively, I just can't help but feel that this is a few tweaks away from being truly excellent.
