For those special moments when the conflict between wanting a stout or a Mounds candy bar is too much, there's this: a collaborative imperial stout between the brewing teams of J. Wakefield and Southern Grist for a decadent dessert-like taste that will satisfy the sweet tooth of the most staunch malt supporter.
Doing a happy dance with the first sip, Moves Like Jaggery first pours nearly stark black and with tawny edges. Its rich mocha froth billows over with a rich blend of sultry aromas hinging on chocolate and coconut first and holiday spice, kahlua and coffee in a secondary scent. Malty richness slathers the front of the tongue with the lavish sweetness of milk chocolate, toffee, vanilla and sweet heavy cream.
And once the tastebuds adjust to the robust sweetness of the stout, complementary flavors of candied coconut and cashew come out and play. Unrelenting sweetness extends well onto the late palate where the spice of cardamom brings a nearly nutmeg, clove and allspice roundness to the balance of the beer. A hint of woodsy hops aid the spice in taking an ever so slight edge off of the sugary stout and its milkshake textures.
Recklessly full, rich and creamy, the J. Wakefield attitude comes with a sugary creme that keeps those milkshake tendencies going deep into aftertaste and long after the finish. An extension of chocolate, coconut and vanilla will having you passing on dessert.

Enjoyed on draft in a snifter. Pours with tan lacing and a persistent ring of foam. I enjoy the cardamom that others have complained about, but it dominates the nose. Undertones of chocolate, coconut, clove, and plum. Not getting much with respect to the cashews. Somewhat cloying in terms of sweetness, making me glad I went for a small pour.

Catdamom is gross. This is a damn good beer otherwise. The coconut masks it a bit too.

Poured into a snifter. Dark opaque brown color. A vigorous pour produced a tan head that quickly dissipated. Lots of cardamom on the nose. Some coconut and clove but big on the cardamom. The taste was more balanced. Toasty coconut out of the gate followed by lots of spice and a faint nutty note mixed into roasted malt. The finish was back to the cardamom. Full bodied and thick but not overly sweet. Overall very interesting. I’d like to see the cardamom fade a bit, but a fun and enjoyable beer for sure.

This meets southern grits standards, but i honestly feel like they should have stopped at coconut. Big bodied pastry stout in the SG classic style, but the flavors get kind of muddled together. Not huge on the cardomen etc i guess. Otherwise very nice
