Doubling their pleasure, doubling their fun, Southern Grist doubles down on currant berries when celebrating a fruit forward flavor for their fairly generic sour ale.
Dark ruby and with a shade of purple, Double Fruited Double Currant builds a light lavender stained froth before drawing the nose with a fully saturated dark berry scent along with its tangy scent of sourness hidden within. Candied sweetness and a creamy undertow brings an element of pie dough to a highly convincing taste of dark berry flavored pre-set jello.
As the flavors of both the redcurrant and blackcurrant unfold on the tastebuds, the sweetness holds firm with the density of pie filling. A wallop of robust berries brings about a slushy notion that's chocked with black cherry, plum, blackberry and blueberry to the middle palate. The tartness of the ale within links up with undercurrents of cider, wine, lime, lemon and plum. Low-lying bitterness allows the sourness to carry the balance along with bold sweet, dark wine overtones.
Medium-full in body, certainly full for sour ale, the beer's fruity sweetness becomes pleasantly cloying to the tongue, finishing creamy-sweet and with a long, juicy, syrupy fruit aftertaste.
