Tasted in a Spiegelau stout glass from a one pint can on March 14, 2020. Brewed with cacao nibs, vanilla beans and almonds. There is a nice balance of sweetness and nuttiness.

Everyone needs cake for their birthday, and Southern Grist is making their own and drinking it too. Built like chocolate cake, equipped with cacao nibs, vanilla and almonds, a richer dessert beer seems to come with its own frosting.

Their 4th Anniversary Petit Four pours with the consistency of milkshake, albeit a dark one. As the dark ale patiently settles, its onyx-like depths float a dainty creme of froth. its decadent scent swoons the nose with chocolate, coffee and cream; along with a gentle spice of kahlua. As sweet as advertised, the caramel, condensed milk vanilla and chocolate swirl on the tongue with the lavishness of chocolate cake.

Much of the same happens as the stout stretches far across the middle palate, saturating each and every tastebud with the richness of creamy malt, lactose sugars, toffee, caramel and light molasses. As the almond character adds depth and richness, a nearly rummy spice shows up in the late palate, decorated with marzipan and a mild hop bitterness for a slight semblance of balance.

Full, creamy and lush, the beer is unapologetically cloying, relying on its sheer celebration of culinary flavors to carry the load rather than any attempt to achieve any sense of drinkability. A long finish of sugar laced desserts extend deep into an aftertaste that easily lasts into the next sip. What'ya know... you can have your cake and drink it too.
