16 oz can, dated 10/22/20, was only a day old when I picked it up. I've had this wonderful beer over the course of the 4 pack, and now it's time to actually sit down and review it.
Poured into my very fitting Southern Grist pink logo snifter.
Pours a very juicy dark purple, reminiscent of blackberries and of NE IPA, and blends in with the logo on my snifter. The head is bubble gum pink, forms a finger's height, and then recedes to a thin ring with spotty lacing up the sides.
Aroma from the can is tiny marshmallows and blackberry yogurt; aroma from the glass is primarily diced apricots in syrup and lactose sweetness, basically completing the picture of this beer.
The sweetness has faded on this can a bit, but most of its magic is still there. Tart blackberry and dank apricot come first, followed by marshmallow cereal and milk sugar. This beer is more tart than sweet. Has a great balance. Doesn't overdo it.
This sour is very juicy on the mouth with lots of acidity and creaminess. It has the same mouthfeel as a good NE IPA but with added bite and acidity. It is another fantastic category for this beer.
Overall, again, this is a breakfast smoothie. These guys are great at making them while not going overboard on the sugar content. It seems to many brewers, a "smoothie sour" means overwhelming the beer with lactose and sugar, then adding whatever gimmick fruit is featured in their vegan of the month catalog. Southern Grist on the other hand creates balance with their breakfast sours and they hold up very well. I highly recommend this and other "Hill" sours.
Price paid : $22.99 / 4 pack
Would buy again : I will keep trying other flavors in the Hill series.
