Deliciously built like a fruit cobbler but out of the stuff of sour ale, Southern Grist gives the passionfruit sour ale a taste for dessert.
Passionfruit Cobbler pours with a luxurious golden orange haze before building a plush and creamy froth. As the ale settles toward stillness, a savory but sour scent emerges with a boisterous perfume of tropical fruit, pastry crust and a mix of cider, wine and cream. As its generous cereal sweetness coats the tongue, the grains work to provide a vanilla cream upstart with hints of honeysuckle and taffy close behind.
With the ale opening up to a full flavored passionfruit smoothie character, the sweetness relaxes and allows the sourness to build upon the tongue. Succulent, tangy and exotic in nature, the taste shares lime, lemon, orange, papaya, peach and honeydew in complement to a fruit punch character equipped with sherbet and pie crust. Trending sour but supported, the creaminess of the vanilla balances the acidity and allows for a delicious closure.
Medium bodied, but fuller for sour ale, this "smoothie sour" ale is a delightful trend in beer making. Taking it further from the traditional taste of beer, the beer seems more of a cocktail than of anything ale related. But whatever it is, what's undeniable is that its delicious. The cobbler ale finishes sweet and sour with a short extension of pastry crust once more.
