2025 vintage, into a snifter.
Pours a slick, oily black, with reddish brown undertones. No foam (SO NO HEAD?!) at completely opaque. Aroma is caramel, burnt sugar, molasses, and a lot of whiskey. Some fudge and brownie batter as well. Flavor follows the nose, chocolate, brown sugar, loads of bourbon and wheat whiskey. The front end is all sweet, smooth whiskey and chocolate, and the finish is heavy oak and burnt sugar. There's a lot of complexity here, but all of it is smooth and soft. It feels like a more bourbon-forward version of GI Vanilla Rye, without the extra vanilla. Everything feels very natural and intended, and it's very deep and rich while still being very easy to drink. Feel is exceptional, the body is extremely high, and the mouthfeel is extremely chewy and thick. Finish is sticky sweet but also drying.
Overall, exceptional, and one of the best stouts I've ever had. It doesn't end up artificial or too sweet, but remains spirit-forward and balanced. Wow. Southern Grist and Barreled Souls did an exceptional job here.
