2023 vintage, into a snifter.
Pours jet black with no foam, completely opaque. Aroma is sweet molasses and alcohol alongside some spices and marshmallows. Flavor follows nose, pumpkin pie spices, sweet marshmallows, some light pumpkin, rich brown sugar and molasses, and the heavy dark malt flavors of the base Batch One Theory. It's incredibly heavy and shockingly complex, and the rum presence is extremely strong which colors this beer into being sweeter and more authentic to the pumpkin pie concept. The finish brings a lot more of the pie flavors but the upfront idea is just a rich sweeter stout aged heavily with rum. The adjuncts are actually to the background as it feels really like a boozy rum barrel stout. It's sweet and syrupy but not overly sugary, not balanced at all, but not cloying and very enjoyable. Alcohol presence and burn is actually minimal, it's just quite alcohol-flavored. Feel is great, super sticky and thick, and it's definitely a heavy beer, but no ethanol or off flavors. I feel like it aged well and the rum barrels feel great.
Overall, a delicious pastry stout that doesn't feel gross or overbearing. It's definitely pumpkin pie inspired, but I think the age has really moved it into being a complex rum barrel stout. I'm a big fan and enjoy how balanced the adjuncts, barrel, and base beer feel.
