2022 vintage, into a snifter.
Pours a jet black with minimal foam. Aroma is cherries and fudge with a distinct rye presence, as well as lots of vanilla. Flavor is similar, dark chocolate with cherry and raspberry as well as some sweet fudge and cinnamon. Very rich and thick which feels great, but very rye-forward in how deep the chocolate and dark fruits feel. It has a lot in common with the Goose Island 2024 Vanilla Rye in that the doughy vanilla and cocoa flavors are very forward, but this one is much more bitter and dark, and honestly more balanced. Feel is great, heavy and syrupy but with no alcohol presence and a very long bittersweet finish. It's quite spirit-forward but with the thickness of a huge beer, and I feel as though the age on this bottle mellows out any burn or ethanol on it.
Overall, another great unadjuncted bottle from Southern Grist. This one really feels like a world-class BA stout with tons of complexity and really unique flavors.
