Hopewell is a brewery that I respect. I have never had a bad beer from them, and they tackle a wide range of styles with success. Their take on an ESB is no exception. Restrained and very pleasant, this beer is extremely drinkable, especially on colder weather. Has a bit less mouthfeel than I would have hoped for, but again, quite drinkable overall.

16oz can. Poured out a clear, golden amber color with a small, khaki-colored head of foam. It left sudsy patches of foam. It smelled of roasted malt, coffee and toffee. Sweet caramel maltiness with earthy notes and some citrus.

This is the right idea for an ESB. It is subtle like the style, but offers up a nice twang of hops at the end to suit the American palate.
Pours and Looks like the real deal, although a bit more clarity needed to be authentic. Smells like malt becoming biscuit with nuts lingering in the back. Nuts emerge stronger mid-palate and then give way to the hops as they linger in the finish. This is medium-mouthed, but barely.
I like Hopewell, but have not paid much attention to them since I stopped seeing their saison (which was great with pizza.) Hopewell does all the good-guy things (beer as urban renewal, sustainable agriculture and makes all those difficulties taste better.) So I'm glad I had Belly Up, and I just might have another sometime soon.

Canned 9.14.22
Poured at fridge temp into a weizen glass.
Pours a true amber with dull orange highlights and very sediment heavy. 3.75
Strong and clear herbal, rooty and earthy aroma. I want to say I get notes of licorice root, elm, bark, marshmallow root, flowery and slightly perfumey. 4.5
Delightfully herbally bitter, nutty, light malts and a touch of sweetness. 4.25
Light, moderate carbo, bitter and silky. 4
Overall what a bitter that I haven't had anything to compare it to. 4.25

Canned 9/14/22; drank 10/28/22 @ the Yarchives.
Semi-opaque orange brown appearance.
A rough pour yielded a small off-white head; a thick curtain of tree-rung lace.
Rye bread & lemon notes in the nose.
Creamy, medium thick mouthfeel.
Rye bread & lemon flavors.
Pleasant, flavorful & mild. A nice ESB!

16 oz can into a pint glass.
A: Slightly hazy copper color. Minimal head quickly faded to a thin film.
S: Hard to detect much of anything. Very faint toasted malt.
T: Bready malt up front is nice, but the medicinal hop bitterness adds some astringency that can overwhelm it on some sips.
F: Medium-light bodied, low carbonation, goes down smooth.
