*Collaboration with Burgeon Beer Company
Murky Double IPA with Citra, Sultana & Cashmere Hops
8.8% ABV
Here in the depths of December, it’s a custom to gather together with family and friends and share the gifts that you enjoy the most. We teamed up with our Carlsbad-based friends Burgeon Beer Company to create this Murky Double IPA.
This year’s batch showcases our first hand selected lot of Citra hops from Wyckoff Farms in Washington, pineapple-forward Sultana hops, and mango from the Cashmere hops. Makes a great stocking stuffer, or just a nice way to treat yourself over the holidays.

Glass: Pure Project 14-oz. snifter elemental (air) glass
Price: $23 for a 4-pack
From: Pure Project (North Park) in San Diego, Calif.
Purchased: Dec. 16, 2022
Consumed: Dec. 16, 2022
Misc.: Collaboration with Burgeon; Canned on Dec. 7, 2022; Split (2/4) with Sonny (1/4) and Kevin (1/4)
Snuck over to Pure Project North Park to pick up a 4-pack of these. Had this once before, giving a taster a 4.25 on Jan. 12, 2019 at the Pure Project third anniversary party and just writing “Excellent for haze.” Pure Project’s website called for “Our annual murky double IPA release with our friends at Burgeon Beer, Home for the Holihaze, is back! The fifth batch of this festive brew features a bouquet of our favorite hops of the year: Citra, Citra Cryo, Riwaka, and Strata. Aromas of passion fruit jam, ripe strawberry, and dried mango grace the nose while flavors of lemon sorbet, guava, and orange zest dance upon the palate. Packing a lofty ABV and juicy mouthfeel, Home for the Holihaze makes a great gift for the beer lover in your life, or just a nice treat for yourself.”
Poured a light golden hazy color with four fingers of frothy white head. Could see just a few bubbles coming up along the sides of the glass. Almost perfect spiderweb foamy lacing. Almost perfect foamy retention. (Sight - 4.75)
Smelled Citra, grapefruit, Strata, strawberry, dank pine, weed, passion fruit, lemon zest, orange rind, Riwaka, guava, mango and floral. A tad better out of the can with the addition of Sprite soda. (Smell - 4.25)
Tasted almost as good as the nose but not quite. In order got Citra, grapefruit, dank pine, weed, Strata, passion fruit, strawberry, mango, guava, lemon zest, Riwaka, orange rind, floral and viney berry. (Taste - 4.00)
Medium body. Creamy texture. Lively carbonation. Abrupt, citrusy finish. (Feel - 4.25)
Really good but not quite as good as I remember it. (Overall - 4.25)

Promoted as a murky IPA, and that's accurate. Look and mouthfeel of a hazy, but the dank, grassy taste overwhelm any traditional hazy IPA tropical notes. The nose hints at the dank hops to follow. Pretty interesting twist from a great brewery.

Excellent full flavor DIPA here. They had this around Christmas time and it was well received. I'm reviewing this in May however so the exact flavors escape my memory a bit, but I do recognize the name and loved it. I am more of a stout guy, but I think I am warming up to the DIPAs, especially the citrusy type. Watching for this to hopefully resurface next year.
