Collaboration with Barreled Souls.
Brewed with our friends at Barreled Souls, The Lost Voyage pays homage to the Arctic Ale, the king of Burton Ales. Based on a beer brewed for exploration of the North-west Passage in 1851, this ale was designed to not freeze in the sub-zero climate of the Arctic and bring warmth and nourishment to the sailors trapped in the Arctic wastes. Our version was brewed with heirloom Maris Otter Barley Malt from England as well as dark caramel syrup replicating brewing sugars of the era. It was then aged a year in Portuguese Tawny Port Barrels, providing this stately sipper vinous notes of oak, sticky toffee pudding, and candied fruit.

Type: 22-oz. bottle
Reviewed as: Old Ale
Glass: Pure Project 16-oz. brandy snifter glass
Price: $24.00 (20 pct. off with AHA card; regular price $30.00)
From: Pure Project in Balboa Park (San Diego), Calif.
Purchased: July 2, 2020
Consumed: July 3, 2020
Misc.: Batch #1; Bottled in Feb. 2020; Blue waxed bottle neck (which took me forever to get off)
Had Sonny pick me up a bottle of this on a recent trip to Pure Project. I heard there was only two left after it. Had been wanting this for a while, really since COVID-19 started. I wanted to get over there in March to have a taster of it. Luckily, the 20 pct. off made it a little easier to but this for $24 instead of $30. Pure Project’s website called this, “Brewed with our friends at Barreled Souls, The Lost Voyage pays homage to the Arctic Ale, the king of Burton Ales. Poured an almost pitch black color with 1-to-2 fingers of khaki tan frothy head. Serene setting underneath the glass. Bad lacing. Outstanding retention. (Sight - 3.75)
Smelled raisin, fig, date, port wine barrel, oak, purple grape, cocoa, milk chocolate, toffee, caramel, brown sugar and dark cherry. More dark fruits from the bottle. (Smell - 4.50)
Tasted almost as good. Damn this was complex. In order got port wine barrel, raisin, fig, date, plum, purple grape, dark cherry, oak, milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee and brown sugar. That 13 pct. ABV was well hidden. (Taste - 4.50)
Medium body. Sticky texture. Soft carbonation. Long, warming, oaky finish. (Feel - 5.00)
So damn good. Very complex, but so smooth. Actually bummed I only got one bottle. (Overall - 4.50)
