Collaboration with Moksa Brewing Company

We teamed up again with our NorCal friends at Moksa Brewing to bring you Hella Murk. A nod to Northern California, this murky double IPA is built on a foundation of Sacramento-grown organic barley, oats, and wheat malted by Alameda-based Admiral Maltings. Blazing through the murkiness are hand-selected Nelson Sauvin, Citra, and Simcoe hops, which were specially combined to rekindle faded memories of NorCal-grown Sour Diesel. Essences of white wine, orange zest, stone fruit and resinous pine resonate through an intensely hoppy mouthfeel and induce all the happy feels.

Knew I wanted to have this a few weeks back when I saw it coming out, mainly because it was a collab between Pure Project and Moksa, and partially because of the hop combo - Nelson, Citra and Simcoe. Description on Facebook read, “We teamed up again with our NorCal friends at Moksa Brewing to bring you Hella Murk. Poured a pale-to-golden murky color with three fingers of rocky-to-frothy white head. Just a few bubbles coming up along the sides of the glass. Perfect layered spiderweb lacing. Perfect foamy retention. Such a good-looking beer. (Overall - 5.00)

Smelled big orange flavors up front, in order getting orange blossom, orange creamsicle, nectarine, peach, passionfruit, gooseberry, grapefruit, papaya and hints of pineapple. Lots of citrus and tropical fruit. For mentioned hops, I would say more Nelson, followed by Citra and lesser Simcoe. Almost as good out of the can and certainly still more big orange citrus. (Smell - 4.25)

Taste followed the nose, but not quite as good to me. In order got orange blossom, orange creamsicle, tangerine, nectarine, peach, passionfruit, gooseberry, bitter grapefruit rind, papaya, pineapple, pine and hints of vanilla cream (wishful?). Nice balance of Nelson, Citra and slightly lesser Simcoe. (Taste - 4.00)

Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Abrupt juicy finish. (Feel - 4.00)

This was an outstanding beer overall. I’m wondering if it will get a little better with a little time. (Overall - 4.00)
