355 mL can from a six-pack purchased at Metro; dated Nov 22 2023 and served slightly chilled. This is one of Anderson's flagship brews, so I was shocked to discover that I haven't actually reviewed it yet. Time to fix that oversight.

Pours a relatively clear copper-amber colour, with one finger of bubbly, soapy, tan-coloured head rising from the surface. It holds together for two minutes, soon broken down to a frothy collar and some filmy suds on the surface; a modest smattering of stringy lace is also left behind. Malt forward, sweet aroma that offers up notes of caramel and toasty, bready malts; there are also hints of dark fruit, honey and a touch of biscuit.

The flavour is just as rich & malty as the nose suggested, perhaps even richer. Toasted bread and biscuity sweetness come through first, in addition to caramel & toffee; these flavours are joined by hints of earthy, leafy, slightly herbal hop bitterness on the back end. Toffee and toasted malts linger momentarily into the aftertaste. Light in body, with assertive carbonation that adds some pep to this amber ale's smooth mouthfeel. I could drink it again without a fuss, but their Brown is a little more up my alley.

Final Grade: 3.77, a B+. It's true that ambers are a style I have lost interest in over the last decade, but it's also the case that I try to grade to style wherever possible - and sometimes that means I'll 'overcorrect' when it comes time to grade these beers. In other words, I tend to go easier on styles that I don't especially care for. I may be doing just that with Anderson's Amber, but at the end of the day I think it's a step up from many of the other Ontario ambers that I've tried over the years. Well worth a shot if you enjoy malt-forward session ales.

Look: The beer's body is opaque, meaning it was brewed with unfiltered water. As well, it is ruby red and has a white one-finger head that recedes to a ring that leaves the whole beer exposed. Expect a little bit of lacing.

Smell: The beer has a pleasant malty nose.

Taste: The palate is in line with the beer's nose. Less hoppy than its British counterparts, this Amber Ale has notes of toffee and caramel. It is also complemented at the end with a barely noticeable hint of cereal. In short, the maltiness was not too dominant.

Feel: The beer has a mild carbonated and easy-drinking feel. It doesn't have a dry finish, which will please many people. Yet, do not expect a tart texture as you would for a Saison.

Overall: While the the taste of this beer is beyond reproach, some will be disappointed by the short retention of the head. Nonetheless, I will gladly drink it again.
