355 mL can from a sixer purchased at the brewery; dated Mar 3 2017 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a relatively clear chestnut brown colour, taking on more of a deep amber hue when held to the light. An inch of frothy, light beige-coloured foam arises at the surface, lasting a little over 5 minutes before it finally begins to yield. In its place, a wide, creamy collar is left to hang around beneath a full coating of fine lace. Looks good. Milk chocolate, cocoa and espresso coffee are the most apparent aspects of the aroma, at least by my nose's judgment - though there's also some interspersed nutty, roasty dark malt and brown sugar sweetness. Very enticing.
A quality-tasting brown ale, no doubt. Rich dark malt flavours abound from start to finish, starting off with some caramel/brown sugar, leading into some toasted nuts and biscuity notes. Cocoa, chocolate and espresso flavours, together with some earthy, leafy hops, join in towards the finish, which I'd describe as slightly bittersweet, followed by a nutty aftertaste which doesn't linger long. Light-medium body, with low carbonation levels that weakly agitate the surfaces of the mouth; the overall texture is soft and smooth. Superb drinkability - exactly what I want from my brown ales.
Final Grade: 4.16, an A-. By my estimates, Anderson's Brown Ale is one of the best browns you can find in Ontario these days. Don't let the low abv fool you: this is neither watery nor thin, and is in fact one of the most flavourful domestic browns I recall sampling. Plowing through this six-pack in a night would not be even remotely challenging for anyone who enjoys this style, or anything malt-forward, really. Highly recommended; the LCBOs around me are sorely lacking in worthwhile brown ales, so I'd love to see this one earn a SKU in the future - Lord knows I'd be buying it regularly, that's for sure.
